Guide to Pairing Wine with Sushi

Sushi? Who doesn’t LOVE sushi? Sushi has been one of our biggest go-to's for take-home of all time! Sushi has been around for centuries starting all the way from China and influencing different neighbouring countries, but has been super popular in Australia for a really long while and we’re all loving it! The gentle taste of the fish with the soft and fluffy rice is the best way to have a taste of the ocean! Sushi is usually paired with Sake, a wine made from fermented rice, but who said you couldn’t enjoy it with a great glass of wine? (or two!) If you want to learn how to pair wine with your favourite sushi, read on ahead!

Nigiri or Sashimi

Usually raw, these types of sushi are fresh and flavorful! If you want to have sushi and get the best out of the fish, try pairing Nigiri or Sashimi with a Riesling or a Sparkling wine to get the best out of the wonderful fish you’re eating!

California Roll

California Rolls are huge favourites! The great flavours from the fresh ingredients such as cucumber, mango, avocado, and Kani create the best combination for creamy umami goodness! Try pairing this fan fav with a glass (or bottle!) of fermented sparkling wine so you can enjoy your California Roll to the next level!

Salmon and Avocado Roll

Who’s a fan of Salmon? Certainly us! If you love Salmon as much as we do, try getting the salmon and avocado roll! The fresh and fatty salmon go so well with the creaminess of the avocado. Create the best compliment by drinking Chardonnay along with this sushi roll!

Spicy Tuna Roll

Tuna is a fish with a bit more meat than fat! But the avocado and chilies create such a great explosion of flavours in your mouth! When pairing a Spicy Tuna Roll with wine, it’s best to get a bottle that has a little bit of body as well, we suggest getting a Rosé, Pinot Noir, or a lighter style of Grenache to really enjoy the taste of the Tuna itself!

Tempura Prawn Roll

Love the crunch? Tempura prawn rolls are the best if you’re craving something flavourful and crunchy! To enjoy this type of sushi, pick out something acidic like a Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, or other Semillon Blends to create the perfect balance!

Teriyaki Chicken Sushi Roll

If you’re not in the mood to eat fish but still want sushi, a Teriyaki Chicken Roll will surely satisfy those cravings! These have a bit of sweetness but also some saltiness because of the teriyaki sauce! Pairing this roll with a glass of Pinot Noir or Pinot Gris will give you that perfect balance you really need!
