Guide To Pairing Wine with Pizza

Pizza? Who doesn’t love pizza?! The oh-so-fluffy dough, the yummy toppings, and the cheese! Who doesn’t love the cheese? But you know what else is great alongside pizza? Wine! If you love pizza and wine together as much as we do, then read ahead to find out the very best pairing of wine for each flavourful slice!

Pairing Wine With Different Pizza Toppings

Margherita Pizza

The classic margherita! With its flavourful sauce, creamy mozzarella, and basil! This pizza is one of the classics and very aromatic that’s wonderfully paired with light to medium-bodied wines! We recommend pairing this wonderful pizza with some Pinot Grigio, Sangiovese, or Rosé. We don’t suggest you pair this with heavy bold wines because it will be too overpowering with the pizza.

Pepperoni Pizza

Who doesn’t love a good pepperoni pizza?! The strong slices of pepperoni are beautifully balanced by a wine that’s rich, and fruity in flavour! Since the pepperoni is also fat, it should also be noted that an acidic wine will do great with it! Opt for a Sangiovese, Barbera, Nero d’Avola, and Nebbiolo to create the perfect balance.

Hawaiian Pizza

We all know that pineapple on pizza creates such harmony in flavour with the sweetness and savoury of the toppings combined! It’s great to pair this with an acidic wine with sweetness to compliment the pineapple! A glass or bottle of Riesling, Prosecco, Sauvignon Blan, and Fiano is a great match for a yummy Hawaiian moment!

Meatlover’s Pizza

The intense flavours of a meatlover's pizza sure is a huge kick for our taste buds! The strong flavour will go great with a wine that has a bit more tannins to create a perfect balance with the fattiness of the meat! A wine that has rich fruity flavours will create such a great compliment to this beautiful pizza. We suggest trying to put a good Cabernet Sauvignon Tempranillo, Shiraz, and Malbec!

BBQ Chicken Pizza

The lovely smokiness of the barbecue sauce, zesty onion, and meaty chicken will go so well with a glass of fruity wine! It goes well with light-bodied reds without overpowering the pizza or the pair of wine you chose it with. Go for a Pinot Noir, Dolcetto, Merlot, Chardonnay, or a Rosé!

Vegetarian Pizza

If you have a love for some Veg Pizza because of the freshness and flavourful punch of the herbs and veggies, we suggest you try out a wine that doesn’t completely overpower the taste of your toppings! Complement the flavours of your veg pizza with a citrusy and herby wine similar to a Chardonnay! Other pairs we suggest are Sauvignon Blanc, Prosecco, Fiano, and Rosé!

There are no rules to picking out which is the best wine to pair with your favourite pizza! But this guide will surely help you find that glass of wine that you will surely enjoy along with your slice! You may even experiment with what will surely be your favourite to pair, the possibilities are endless after all!
