Harmony Space, Southport

Whisper seats, gentle waterfalls and an easy dog walk

Tucked beside the old Commonwealth Games site in Southport, the Harmony Space sits inside the Gold Coast Health and Knowledge Precinct and the Smith Collective. It’s a small slice of calm with landscaped paths, ponds, little waterfalls and a clever centrepiece that turns quiet chat into something a bit magical.

What the “Harmony Space” actually is

At the heart of the garden are two sculptural whisper seats facing each other across a paved circle. They’re shaped to collect and direct sound, so when you speak softly from one seat it carries to the other without microphones, phones or yelling across the lawn. The plaque explains it as a place for reflection, conversation and welcome, with greetings etched into the paving. Translation: you can have a proper chat at a distance and feel like you’re in on a secret.

Where you’ll find it

You’ll spot the Harmony Space up on the rise above the ponds, a short wander from the Smith Collective apartments and retail. It’s all part of the broader Health + Knowledge Precinct, so the vibe is tidy, landscaped and easy to navigate.

Why we like it

  • It’s peaceful. The water features cut the traffic noise and the open lawn gives you sky for days.

  • It’s sneaky interactive. Sit in one whisper seat, send a message to a mate in the other and watch them grin when it lands.

  • It’s walk-friendly. Flat paths, good sightlines and benches dotted around for a breather.

Dog-friendly stroll

We did the loop with Penelope and Bert and it’s a winner for on-lead dogs. Plenty of grass for sniffing, paths for purposeful strutting, and shady pauses when the sun gets too bossy. Bring water for the pups in warmer weather and keep them leashed around the ponds and garden beds.

Accessibility and practical bits

  • Access: Wide, smooth concrete paths suitable for prams and mobility aids.

  • Parking: Street and precinct parking nearby; mornings and late arvos are easiest.

  • Shade: Trees and a few structured shades, but hats help at midday.

  • Facilities: You’re close to Smith Collective’s cafés and conveniences for coffee runs or a quick bite.

When to go

Early morning for soft light over the ponds, or golden hour when the lawns throw long, dramatic shadows. Nights are quiet and the precinct lighting makes it feel safe for an easy wander.

Make a day of it

Pair your visit with a coffee from the nearby cafés or wander further through the Health and Knowledge Precinct paths. If you’re the reflective sort, park yourselves in opposite whisper seats and trade secrets like you’re in a spy film. If you’re here for movement, do a lazy lap around the lawns and water, then flop on a bench and people-watch.

Final brushstroke

Harmony Space isn’t a giant attraction; it’s a thoughtful one. A gentle walk, a clever bit of sound design, and a pocket of calm in the middle of Southport’s bustle. If you’re local or cruising the Coast with the family and four-leggeds, add it to your list.

And when you’ve had your fill of quiet, come make some noise with us: check out our Gold Coast Paint and Sip calendar and grab seats for a singalong session nearby.
