The southern end, where the sunset does most of the work
Start at the border. Point Danger sits right on the Queensland and New South Wales line at Coolangatta, and standing on it at dusk with the lighthouse behind you is the cheapest good idea on the Coast. The Gold Coast is sold as endless summer and it mostly delivers, but the year is not flat and pretending otherwise is how you end up standing in a car park in the rain.
Winter is the underrated one. The nights are cool rather than cold, the humidity drops out, and the headland walks at Burleigh, Currumbin and Point Danger stop being a sweaty ordeal. Humpbacks migrate past the Coast through the middle of the year, and you can watch them from land at the southern headlands without booking anything or getting on a boat.
Summer brings the storms. Most afternoons through the wet months the sky stacks up over the hinterland around three or four o'clock and delivers, hard, for forty minutes. It usually clears. It does not always clear. If your entire evening depends on being outdoors between December and March, have a roof in reserve.
School holidays change the maths on everything. Parking at Burleigh, Broadbeach and Surfers goes from annoying to genuinely difficult, and anywhere within walking distance of the beach fills early. The Broadwater suburbs and the northern corridor absorb the crowds far better.
When the weather turns
It will. The Coast gets a summer storm most afternoons for about four months, and a good chunk of the year the wind comes up around four o'clock and takes the beach idea off the table entirely.
