Townsville Esplanade, The Strand

We rolled into Townsville on the Queensland leg and The Strand delivered the goods fast. Sun glinting off the Coral Sea, palms lining the path like it is auditioning for a postcard, and Magnetic Island sitting smug on the horizon. This is Townsville's 2.2 kilometres of beachfront promenade, the city's shared backyard, and it is the kind of waterfront that makes you accidentally clock 10,000 steps before lunch.

The lay of the land

The Strand runs 2.2 kilometres along the North Ward beachfront, from the city end up to Kissing Point, and it packs a remarkable amount into one flat, scenic strip. You get beaches, shaded stretches, playgrounds, free barbecues and picnic lawns, the jetty, a free water park with a famously generous dumping bucket, cafes and restaurants along the way, and constant front-row views of Magnetic Island. The light shifts all day and the island throws different blues and purples at you like it is doing wardrobe changes. It is hard to take a bad photo here, which is frankly annoying for anyone who likes to blame their camera. Busy in a good way too, with runners, prams and sunset walkers giving it that holiday hum.

The Rock Pool

At the northern end you will find the Strand Rockpool, a big stinger-resistant seawater lagoon that is completely free to swim in. It is gently sloped, with a shallow accessible entry leading into deeper water for proper laps, lifeguards on duty daily, and it closes on Wednesdays for cleaning outside public holidays. Here is why it matters: stinger season on this coastline runs from roughly November to May, when the open beach swimming moves inside the netted enclosures at Strand North and South. The Rockpool stays a safe, salty option all year round, which makes it the smartest mid-walk cooldown in the city. The water is for humans only, but dogs are welcome on the surrounding grass.

Juliette's gelato break

Chocolate from Juliette's on the beachfront is non-negotiable. Rich, smooth and the precise sugar hit you need to power the return leg. If you are not a chocolate person, that is fine, be wrong confidently. Coffee is solid too, and the queue moving past the window is half the people-watching on the strip.

Dog friendly touring

Penelope and Bert turned The Strand into their personal catwalk. Long, even paths, plenty of grassy pauses, water taps and sea breezes that set the beagle ears flapping like little flags. Keep dogs on lead, stay courteous around the joggers, and you will have an easy, happy walk with loads of sniffable moments. The jetty and the Ocean Siren

The Strand Jetty is the strip's social spine by day and its quiet stage by night, when the night fishers work under the lights with Magnetic Island glittering behind them. Just offshore stands the Ocean Siren, the illuminated Museum of Underwater Art sculpture whose colours shift with live Great Barrier Reef water temperature data after dark. Time your evening lap to pass her once the lights are on. It is the smartest free thing you can do on a Townsville night, and it turns a simple stroll into a story.

Kissing Point and Jezzine Barracks

At the northern end the path climbs to Kissing Point, the headland parkland at Jezzine Barracks where a century of military history meets some of the best evening views in the city. Interpretive artworks and memorials thread along the clifftop paths, the lawn looks back down the full sweep of the Strand one way and out over Rowes Bay the other, and at sunset the whole headland turns into the locals' favourite free show. Parking and timing

There is plenty of parking along the foreshore and nearby streets, but it fills quickly from late morning into early evening thanks to the runners and gelato-powered families, so aim early or swing back for golden hour. Sunrise and sunset both kick off with kinder temperatures and prettier light, and in the dry season from May to October the evening air on this strip is about as close to perfect as Australian weather gets.

Go wide to stack palms, path and island in one frame. Use the pool railing for leading lines. For dog portraits, crouch low and let the sea fill the background.
