6 Things To Do In Kangaroo Point At Night: Cliffs, Bridge Lights And River Laps
Kangaroo Point owns Brisbane's best view and doesn't charge for it. The clifftop looks straight across the black river at the lit CBD, the Story Bridge glows overhead at the northern tip, and the peninsula in between packs parks, pubs and boardwalks into a loop you can walk in an hour. At night it's the postcard, animated.
We run paint and sip sessions in Kangaroo Point and we've lost count of the guests who arrive early just to walk the cliffs first. Smart. Here's the full night list.
1. The clifftop at city-lights hour
Kangaroo Point Cliffs, River Terrace. The main event. The clifftop path faces the CBD across the river, and once the towers light up it's the best free show in Brisbane. Arrive at dusk, watch the skyline switch on, stay for the boats sliding past below. Every visitor gets brought here eventually, locals just skip the queue.
2. A twilight Story Bridge climb
Story Bridge, northern end of the peninsula. Brisbane is one of the few cities in the world where you can climb the bridge, and the twilight slot is the connoisseur's pick: up in golden hour, down in full city lights. Save it for the milestone nights, the view earns the price tag.
3. A barbie in the cliffs parkland
Kangaroo Point Cliffs Park, below the cliffs. Free public barbecues, picnic lawns and the whole lit skyline as the backdrop. It's the cheapest great night in Brisbane: sausages, a rug, and a view that restaurants across the river charge triple digits to sit near. Clear winter nights here are criminally underrated.
4. The boardwalk and ferry loop
Kangaroo Point riverside boardwalk. Walk the boardwalk around the peninsula with the water on one side and the towers on the other, then hop a ferry from one of the terminals and ride the river back. The loop turns an after-dinner stroll into a mini harbour cruise for the price of a tap-on.
5. A pub session under the bridge
The Story Bridge end. The pubs clustered at the bridge's southern foot have been hosting Brisbane's nights out for over a century, and there's something correct about a cold drink directly beneath a lit-up icon. Start or finish the night here, tradition either way.
6. A paint and sip singalong (ours, with the skyline for a muse)
We could hardly leave the suburb with the best view off our own books. Paint Juicy runs paint and sip events in Kangaroo Point, three hours at the easel, an artist calling every brushstroke, a singalong building while the paint dries and a drink within reach. Tickets from $59 and precisely zero talent required at the door.
Paint first, then walk the cliffs with a finished canvas under one arm while the city glitters at you. The photo takes itself.
Make a night of it, Kangaroo Point style
Our perfect Kangaroo Point night: dusk on the clifftop, dinner under the bridge, the boardwalk-and-ferry loop home. Our perfect cheap one: a cliffs park barbie with the skyline doing the entertainment for nothing. Across the water, our guides to New Farm at night and Woolloongabba at night cover the neighbours, and the full Brisbane night guide zooms out to the whole city.
THE BIG ONE: The free barbecues in the cliffs parkland are first in, best dressed on weekend evenings, so send the advance party early. And the twilight bridge climb slots are the first to book out, plan those weeks ahead, not days.
