5 Things To Do In Newstead At Night: Brewery Hops, Gasworks Glow And Woolstore Walks
Newstead is Brisbane's brewery quarter: old industrial bones, new industrial-chic everything, and more craft taps per block than any other postcode in the city. The heritage gasometer frame now glows over a dining precinct, the woolstores line the river toward Teneriffe, and the whole suburb hums quietly after dark without ever tipping into Valley chaos next door.
We've painted this suburb and drunk its beer, our Newstead Brewing Co write-up is on the record. Here's the Newstead night list.
1. A craft brewery hop
Newstead's brewery blocks. The suburb that helped kick off Brisbane's craft beer boom still does it best: taprooms in converted warehouses, brewers pouring their own, and everything within walking distance of everything else. We put our own visit to Newstead Brewing Co in writing, and the circuit has only grown since. Start early, taste widely, walk between rounds.
2. Dinner in the Gasworks glow
Gasworks precinct, Skyring Terrace. The heritage gasometer frame, lit up at night, is Newstead's landmark and the dining precinct beneath it delivers: restaurants, bars and dessert stops wrapped around an open plaza. Eat under the steel ring, wander the plaza after, argue about whether the gasometer counts as art. It does.
3. The woolstore walk toward Teneriffe
Newstead riverfront, heading east. The riverside path runs past the great brick woolstores, now apartments wearing their history on the outside, with ferry lights on the water and the city glowing behind. It's the inner north's best free evening hour, and it ends conveniently among Teneriffe's bars if the night deserves an encore.
4. A market night at Eat Street, up the road
Northshore, Hamilton, minutes away. Newstead sits close enough to Eat Street Northshore to claim it: container city, string lights, live stages and a hundred food windows on weekend market nights. Brewery first, Eat Street second, and the designated driver gets first pick of dessert.
5. A paint and sip singalong (ours, hops optional)
Naturally we saved our own for last. Paint Juicy runs paint and sip events in Newstead, three hours at the easel with an artist calling every brushstroke, a singalong that builds while the paint dries and a drink within reach, in this suburb, quite possibly a very good one. Tickets from $59, all supplies provided, no talent required.
The finished canvas travels home under one arm, and the brewery circuit is right outside if the night has more in it.
Make a night of it, Newstead style
Our perfect Newstead night: a taproom warm-up, dinner in the Gasworks glow, the woolstore walk to close. Our perfect cheap one: the river path at dusk with a takeaway from the precinct. One block south, Fortitude Valley at night turns the volume up, New Farm at night winds it down, and the full Brisbane night guide has the whole city on one page.
THE BIG ONE: The taprooms keep different hours and some close earlier than you'd expect on weeknights, so check before building the whole night around one brewery. Weekend arvos into evenings are when the circuit runs at full strength.
