1. A night on the Terrigal Esplanade

Terrigal Esplanade, Terrigal. Terrigal is the Coast's night-out headquarters, and the Esplanade is where it all happens, beachfront bars and restaurants in an easy walkable strip. Post up at Terrigal Beach House (40 Terrigal Esplanade) for a sunset spritz over the sand, catch a band at the rum-and-reggae Mumbo Jumbo's (92 Terrigal Esplanade), tuck into wood-fired pizza across two levels at Rhonda's on Kurrawyba Avenue, or settle in for proper cocktails at Pocket Bar near the beach. Park once and wander.

2. Sunset from The Skillion

The Skillion, Terrigal. The grassy headland at the end of Terrigal Beach is the Coast's signature view, a short, steep walk up to a clifftop that drops away to the ocean on three sides. It is the local move at golden hour, blanket down, drinks in hand, the whole coastline lighting up below you. It is free, it takes minutes, and on a clear night the stars are worth hanging around for. Mind the edge and bring a jacket for the breeze.

3. A film at the historic Avoca Beach Theatre

69 Avoca Drive, Avoca Beach. A genuine one-off. The Avoca Beach Theatre has been running since 1948, the BBC once named it one of the 10 most beautiful cinemas in the world, and it still screens films plus regular live music and comedy in a beautifully old-school room with cushions, a cafe and a licensed bar. Catch a new release or a touring act, grab a craft beer, and enjoy service that simply does not exist at the big chains. Pure Central Coast charm.

4. An evening on the Gosford waterfront

Gosford waterfront, overlooking Brisbane Water. Gosford's waterfront is the city's best evening asset, a foreshore of parkland and paths along Brisbane Water that turns golden as the sun drops behind the hills and the lights come up on the water. Stroll it at dusk, grab a feed in the CBD, and wander the Mann Street art laneway for a bit of after-dark colour. It is flat, easy and lovely, and it pairs neatly with a show or a feed at the Leagues Club around the corner.

5. A paint and sip night (yes, ours, and we have receipts)

Ettalong Beach. The southern end of the Coast has a Mediterranean-style pocket at Ettalong, where the foreshore, the markets on weekends and a string of eateries make for an easy evening. Catch a movie at the independent Cinema Paradiso, or settle in at Ettalong Diggers for a feed, regular live entertainment and water views while the ferries come and go from the wharf. Relaxed, affordable and very Coast.

7. Lake sunset at The Entrance and Long Jetty

The Entrance and Long Jetty foreshore. Up on the lakes, the move is a slow evening by the water. The Entrance waterfront and the retro strip at neighbouring Long Jetty serve up some of the best lake sunsets on the Coast, glassy water, pelicans drifting past and the sky doing its thing over Tuggerah Lake. Grab a feed along the foreshore, then walk it off as the light fades. Quiet, pretty and free.

8. Fish, chips and live music at Woy Woy

Woy Woy waterfront. Woy Woy is the unpretentious heart of the Coast, and a night here is a simple pleasure, fresh fish and chips by the water as the boats bob in the channel. Round it out with a drink and a band at the much-loved Link & Pin, a cafe-turned-bar-and-venue with local beer, a Vietnamese-Australian menu and regular live music. No fuss, all charm.

9. A show and a feed with a view at a leagues club
