6 Things To Do In Southport At Night: Broadwater Sunsets And Big City Energy

Southport is the Gold Coast's CBD and somehow still its best-kept secret after dark. While the strip suburbs fight over beachfront tables, Southport quietly holds the coast's only proper over-water sunset, a rooftop bar with the best skyline view going, the city's official Chinatown and a parklands precinct that glows after the sun drops. This guide covers the northern heart of the coast, assembled by the crew that brings the speakers and the singing to these rooms.

Everything below was open and trading when we checked in June 2026, locations listed, so the only research left is who is driving. Winter is Southport's season: the Broadwater goes glassy, the sunsets go nuclear and the rooftop heaters come out.

1. Sunset over the Broadwater

Broadwater Parklands, Marine Parade, Southport. Here is the Gold Coast's geography cheat code: the coast faces east, so beach sunsets happen behind you, but the Broadwater faces the hinterland, which makes Southport the one spot where the sun actually sets over the water. The Parklands deliver it nightly, sky and Broadwater going orange together, boats silhouetted, the Great Lawn and rockpools in the foreground. Locals know, visitors never think of it, and it is free every single evening. Claim a bench early on winter weekends, the photographers have caught on.

2. Cocktails in the sky at Aviary

Top of Mantra at Sharks, Southport Sharks precinct, Olsen Avenue. Aviary Rooftop Bar pairs one of the best views on the coast, the full Surfers Paradise skyline with the hinterland behind it, with crafted cocktails, handmade Italian pizzas and tapas plates from chef Stefano Rullo. The Nest outdoor deck has heaters for winter and dancing room for later, the indoor lounge has the skyline framed in glass, and the whole thing is an 18+ experience, so it stays grown-up. Book ahead for sunset, that is the slot everyone wants.

3. The Chinatown food lap

Davenport and Young streets, Southport. The Gold Coast's official Chinatown is Southport's after-dark engine room: lantern-strung streets stacked with dumpling houses, hotpot, Korean barbecue, ramen, bubble tea and late-night dessert. The format is simple and elite, walk the precinct, follow the busiest steam, order more than you planned. It is the best-value night of eating on the coast and the streetscape does the atmosphere for free. Cash in on a winter night when the hotpot places earn their keep.

4. Drop a line off the pier

Southport Pier, Broadwater Parklands. The most Southport thing you can do after dark costs a handful of bait. The lit pier at the Parklands pulls a steady evening crowd of locals with rods, thermoses and folding chairs, bream and flathead on the menu and the city lights doubling across the flat water. No boat, no licence drama for basic recreational fishing, no rush. Even if the fish refuse to cooperate, an hour on the pier with the Broadwater glittering is its own result.

5. A big night at the Sharks

Southport Sharks, corner Olsen and Musgrave avenues. Beneath Aviary, the Sharks club proper runs one of the busiest floors in the city: dining rooms, bars, live entertainment and a poker scene serious enough that the club is the permanent home of the APL Million, with the 2026 series locked for August. It is the classic big-club night out done properly, feed everyone, find the entertainment, settle in. Members and guests welcome, and the precinct parking takes the logistics out of it.

6. A paint and sip singalong (yes, ours, and Southport sings like a city)

A night guide from us that skipped our own night would be half a guide. Paint Juicy runs paint and sip events in Southport, three hours of painting along with a guide, a room-wide singalong and a drink on the table, no prior brush time needed. Tickets are $59, with themes covering 80s and 90s nights, ABBA and Movie Magic.

You take home the canvas, the chorus and a phone full of keepers. We know the suburb well, our write-up on Harmony Space in Southport came straight off the back of touring through here.

Make a night of it, Southport style

Our perfect Southport night: Broadwater sunset at the Parklands, dumplings in Chinatown, then cocktails at Aviary while the skyline does its thing. Our perfect cheap one: bait, the pier and a thermos, total spend under fifteen bucks. Heading down the strip? Our guide to Surfers Paradise at night covers the neon end, the Surfers Paradise and Biggera Waters lineups sit either side, and the full Gold Coast lineup runs the length of the strip, with our Biggera Waters and Main Beach night guides coming next.

THE BIG ONE: Southport owns the only true over-water sunset on the Gold Coast, the Broadwater faces west, so the Parklands at golden hour beat any beachfront bar for the actual show. Time dinner in Chinatown for straight after and the night runs itself.
