“The whole room felt like joy!!”

Thermie Carmie, five-star Google review

Your Friday night just got a serious upgrade. 80s and 90s bangers, step by step painting, singalong moments and a room full of people who know every word. You leave with a finished canvas and a sore voice.

Good to know: 18+ only. No BYO, bar at venue.

What this night is

Tugun, this one's yours. On Friday 30 October the Tugun Tavern, on the corner of Golden Four Drive and Toolona Street, hosts our 80s and 90s singalong night, with brushes moving from 6pm and a lavender sunset going up on every easel in the room. It's a southern Gold Coast Friday that ends with a finished canvas under your arm.

Lotti is singing live all night, so the music has a real voice behind it, and we take requests throughout the session. That means the power ballad you've been waiting since 1994 to sing at full volume has a genuine shot. Your host artist runs the painting on the mic, layer by layer, and the pauses in between are for refilling drinks and comparing purples with the table next door.

The 80s warm the room up with synth pop and hair metal, and the 90s take over once the paint is flowing, all girl power anthems and boy band key changes you swore you'd grown out of. It's the Friday before Halloween too, so nobody will mind if your 80s outfit gets a second outing at a costume party the next night.

It works for a big birthday crew and just as well for two mates who keep saying they should do something fun and never quite get around to it. Tugun sits between Currumbin and Bilinga, about four kilometres up the coast from Coolangatta, which makes it an easy drive from Palm Beach, Elanora, Currumbin Waters, Kirra and Tweed Heads. Coming over the border? Queensland skips daylight saving, so 6pm here is 7pm on a NSW clock.

The Tavern has a kitchen, so a meal before the first brushstroke is an easy win. Other dates at this pub sit on the Tugun paint and sip page, while everything else on the coast, from our Disco Isn't Dead Halloween party at Biggera Waters the next day to Robina in January, is listed under Gold Coast paint and sip.

Tonight's Artwork

Lavender Sunset

Rows of lavender rolling toward the horizon while the sun melts into a sky of hot pink, coral and soft lilac. A little stand of trees sits off to one side, the fields catch the last warm light in dabs of purple, blush and cream, and the whole scene glows. It is calm, it is pretty, and it is the kind of painting that looks impossibly good on a wall back home. Loose, bright and completely doable from the very first brushstroke, with all the room you want to make those purples your own.

Before you arrive

→

Arrive early. The Tugun Tavern has food and drinks ready before the session kicks off. Get settled in, grab a drink and find your seat before we start.

→

Wear clothes you do not mind painting in. We supply aprons but acrylic paint is enthusiastic and occasionally ambitious.

→

Dress ups are absolutely welcomed. 80s and 90s gear gets a big reaction from the room. Shoulder pads, scrunchies, bucket hats, go for it.

→

Tickets are online only. They are not sold at the door. If you haven't bought yours yet, grab it online before the night.

FAQs

Who's singing on the night?

Lotti, live for the whole session, running through 80s and 90s hits alongside our host artist. Requests are taken through the night, so come armed with a song.

Which artwork are we painting?

Lavender Sunset. Long rows of lavender run to the horizon under a hot pink, coral and lilac sky, with a little stand of trees off to one side. It's built from loose dabs of colour, so it comes together quickly and looks great on a wall.

What time are we painting until?

Painting starts at 6pm and you'll have up to 3 hours at the easel, putting the finish around 9pm Queensland time. If you're driving up from the Tweed, that's 7pm to 10pm on NSW daylight saving time.

I can barely draw a stick figure. Is that a problem?

Not even slightly. The host shows you each step before you paint it, and lavender rows are mostly dabbing, which is about as beginner-proof as painting gets.

Is singing compulsory?

Only if you want it to be. Plenty of people start the night as quiet observers, and by the time the 90s choruses hit, that plan usually falls apart.

Can I come by myself?

Absolutely. Solo painters book in all the time. We'll find you a spot at a friendly table, so you've got a crew to sing with from the opening number.

We booked on different orders. Can we still sit together?

Yes. Agree on one group name, add it to the "sitting with friends" field on each order as you check out, and we'll take care of the seating.

Can we BYO food or drinks?

No BYO. Tugun Tavern has a bar and its own kitchen, so food and drinks can be bought on the night.

Will a hens or birthday group fit in?

Perfectly. Pop a note on your order at checkout saying who the celebration is for, and the bride-to-be or birthday legend gets a shout-out from the host.

Where can I buy tickets?

Only online, on this page. Tickets aren't sold at the Tavern on the night, so sort yours before you head down Golden Four Drive.

Can we book a private 80s and 90s session instead?

Yes. Your own private night is $700 AUD flat, which covers the first 10 guests, and each guest after that is $65, with at least 10 paid seats needed. Choose a design from our artwork catalogue and we'll happily adjust colours or details for free. Find out about private paint and sip parties.

It was the perfect night out!

We attended Paint Juicy in Yeppoon, painting the beautiful turtle. That's what drew me to this event - it's actually something I'd like to proudly show off on my wall. The whole team were incredibly welcoming and friendly. The instructors and helpers were really patient and made it super easy to produce our own artworks. The live musician made the whole atmosphere feel like a great big party of "friends we haven't met yet" while we were singing along to music that took us back to adolescent memories. And it was great to see everyone walking around admiring each other's paintings while they dried and chatting with their creators.
We had a ton of fun and despite not feeling like I'm particularly arty, I was really proud to have produced a beautiful keepsake and reminder of a great night out with friends. Thanks team, we will definitely keep an eye out for the next time you come back to Yeppoon.
