EOFY marketing ideas for 2027: how to win the last weeks of the financial year

EOFY marketing ideas only work once you accept that two very different buyers go shopping in June. Households are hunting the end of financial year sales, while businesses are deciding what to do with whatever is left in this year's budget before the books close on Wednesday 30/06/2027. This guide is for QLD and NSW businesses that sell to one of those buyers, or both.

Below: what each buyer wants, a June countdown for both states, ideas for business sellers and for retail and services, and the July follow-through. Tax gets a mention as general information only, and Paint turns up near the end.

Two buyers, one deadline

The thirtieth of June is the same date for everyone. What it means depends on whose wallet is open.

The household buyer: still shopping, counting every dollar

The Australian Retail Council and Roy Morgan EOFY forecast, released 16/06/2026 after surveying 5,276 Australians aged 14 and over, put EOFY spending at $10.7 billion AUD, growth of 1.9 per cent that the council pointed out was below inflation. Around 6.1 million people (26 per cent) planned to shop the sales, and 27 per cent of those shoppers expected to spend less than the year before, up six points.

The shopping list was predictable: clothing, footwear and accessories (34 per cent), household appliances and white goods (15 per cent), then electronics and technology (12 per cent). Online was tipped to take 44 per cent of the spend. So people are still buying, they're pickier, and a shop with a real person behind the counter has to give them a reason to come in.

The hard numbers back up the mood. When the ABS reported June 2025, retail turnover rose 1.2 per cent for the month, with clothing and department stores boosted by end-of-financial-year sales and sales of winter clothing. NSW lifted 1.6 per cent and Queensland 1.2 per cent.

The business buyer: closing one budget, opening another

The ABS counted 2,814,778 actively trading businesses at 30 June 2026, in figures released 18/08/2026. During 2025-26, NSW added 26,057 businesses, the biggest net rise of any state or territory, and Queensland added 19,244.

They don't all arrive in the same mood. Some have money left in a line item and a manager who'd rather spend it than see it trimmed next year, the old use-it-or-lose-it budget. Some are pulling forward a purchase they'd make anyway. Some have frozen everything until the new budget opens on Thursday 01/07/2027. You can't tell which from your inbox. You have to ask.

Tax turns up in every June conversation, so handle it carefully. You can share what the ATO publishes: its small business newsroom says that from 1 July 2026, the $20,000 instant asset write-off is permanent for eligible small businesses with aggregated turnover under $10 million. You can't tell a customer their purchase is deductible, because that depends on their circumstances. Send them to the ATO and their accountant, every time.

The June 2027 countdown for QLD and NSW

NSW loses a Monday to the King's Birthday, confirmed on the NSW public holiday list, while Queensland trades straight through June. Queensland's school winter break starts on the last weekend of the financial year, nine days before NSW schools break. For the rest of the year's dates in one place, see our marketing calendar 2027.

EOFY marketing ideas for businesses that sell to businesses

Ask about the leftover budget, by name

In mid-May, write to your ten best clients personally: "Is there anything left in this year's budget you'd like to put to work before 30/06?" A reply-to-me email beats a banner shouting EOFY, and the answers tell you who's spending, saving or frozen.

Quote in a day

A buyer with a deadline often picks whoever answers first. Promise a 24-hour quote through June, and template your three most common jobs now so each quote is a ten-minute edit.

Book it now, deliver it in the new year

Plenty of business buyers like to commit before 30/06 and receive the work after 01/07. Make that easy with fixed dates, a clear scope and a tidy invoice. Whether and when they can claim the cost is their accountant's call, guided by the ATO's rules on prepaid expenses for small business entities. Never promise the answer yourself.

Retire the write-off panic

Equipment sellers spent years running "buy before the write-off ends" campaigns. With the ATO now calling the $20,000 instant asset write-off permanent for eligible small businesses, that last-chance line is out of date. The ATO still ties the claim to the year an asset is first used or installed ready for use, but how that applies is the buyer's accountant's call. Sell on what the coffee machine, ute tray or laptop does in July, not on a write-off that's going nowhere.

Make the paperwork painless

June is when bookkeepers notice who's easy to work with. Send the tax invoice the same day, with your ABN, their purchase order number and every line itemised. Being the supplier nobody chases lasts well past June.

Check your own spend before you sign

You're a business buyer too. If a package lands in your inbox in late June, score it with our event sponsorship checklist first. Brokers and planners, flat out all June, will find their promotion rules in our marketing ideas for mortgage brokers and financial planners.

EOFY ideas for retail and service businesses

Households are careful, so your EOFY message should make a careful shopper feel clever, not pressured. If you're tempted to mark everything down, read our Black Friday marketing ideas for 2027 first, because the case for adding value instead of cutting price applies just as well in June.

Be the shop worth leaving the couch for

EOFY lands in winter, and with 44 per cent of the spend tipped to go online, compete on what a website can't do. Fitting and alterations. Delivery and set-up. Taking the old fridge away. A proper demonstration and a coffee while the paperwork prints. Put those in the headline, not the fine print.

Serve the shoppers who are closing their own books

The hairdresser buying a new dryer, the tradie replacing boots and the bookkeeper upgrading a monitor are all closing their own year in June. A counter sign saying "Tax invoice with ABN on request" and staff who print one without fuss will win customers who'd otherwise buy from a marketplace.

Sell gift cards with the rules in mind

Gift cards suit shoppers who want to spend in June and enjoy it once the weather warms up. Pair the card with a spring date, such as a September service or a spring styling session, so it has a reason to exist. The ACCC's gift card rules apply all year, so read them, exemptions included, before you print.

Package services for July to September

A salon sells a three-visit winter pack. A personal trainer opens July start dates. A cleaner books a quarter of fortnightly visits. June fills the next three months of the diary, and your price stays put.

July: the follow-through most businesses skip

Most EOFY campaigns stop dead on 30/06. The good ones run another fortnight.

  • Thank every June buyer within a week, ask happy ones for a Google review, and give them a reason to return before spring.
  • Contact business clients in the first fortnight of July, while new budgets are fresh. A short "here's what we could do together this year" beats a newsletter.
  • If your messaging leans on tax refunds, time it later in winter. The ATO advises taxpayers to wait until late July to lodge, once most pre-fill information is in, so refunds won't land on day one.
  • Roll into a mid-winter promotion if it suits your business. Our Christmas in July marketing ideas for 2027 cover the weeks around Sunday 25/07/2027.
  • Keep a one-page record of each offer: what it cost, what it brought in and whether you'd run it again in 2028.

Put next year's plan in a room that sings

Paint brings a complete paint and sip night to venues across Queensland and New South Wales: hosts, canvases, music and a live singalong, running for up to three hours. The guests are mostly women, from their thirties into their nineties, out with friends, sisters, mums and workmates, and the reviews keep coming back to two words, fun and atmosphere. The rooms get big, too. On Saturday 01/08/2026, a month into the new financial year, Yeppoon filled a room of 100.

Two hypothetical ways a business could use that in its new financial year:

  • Picture a regional bookkeeping practice planning its next twelve months in June. Instead of one-off spots, it books a year of presence as the only business in its category across a run of nights, which is how a category partnership is built.
  • Here's how a thank-you could run for a commercial cleaning company: instead of chocolates on 30/06, it gifts seats at a July night to the office managers it works with, using brand takeover nights. How that's treated for tax is a question for its accountant, not for us.

EOFY marketing questions from QLD and NSW businesses

When should a business start EOFY marketing for 2027?

Start the business-buyer side in mid-May 2027, because budget holders decide early and the final fortnight gets crowded. The household side can wait until the first week of June, when shoppers expect the sales to begin. Lock in offers, cut-off dates and any accountant-checked wording before then, and allow for the NSW long weekend from 12/06/2027 and the Queensland school break from 26/06/2027.

Can I tell customers my product is tax deductible?

Not as a promise. Whether something is deductible depends on the buyer's business and circumstances, so that judgement belongs to them and their accountant. You can share what the ATO publishes, such as its page on the $20,000 instant asset write-off, and link to it so customers read the source themselves. Keep any tax wording general, and have it checked before it runs.

Do I need an EOFY sale if I don't sell products?

No. Service businesses usually do better selling commitment than markdowns. A bookkeeper can open July onboarding spots, a salon can sell a winter appointment pack and a trainer can offer set start dates for the new quarter. The aim is a booked diary for July to September, long after the June rush.

What should I do with my own leftover marketing budget?

Spend it on something you'd have bought anyway, or let it go. Rushing into a package because the money is sitting there is how businesses end up with a banner nobody remembers. Score any offer against your goals first, and ask whether it can be booked now and run in the new year. Your accountant can explain how the timing of a payment affects your books.

How do the QLD and NSW holidays change EOFY timing?

They split June in two. NSW has the King's Birthday public holiday on Monday 14/06/2027, so NSW messages should land before that long weekend. Queensland has no June public holiday, but its school winter break starts on Saturday 26/06/2027, the last weekend of the financial year. NSW schools don't break until 05/07/2027, so NSW households are still in their usual routine at EOFY.
