Christmas marketing ideas for 2027: a September to December plan for local businesses
Christmas marketing ideas are easy to find in December and close to useless by then, because the businesses that win Christmas made their big calls while everyone else was still wearing jumpers. This one's written for Queensland and NSW shops, cafés, salons, trades and services that want a bigger, calmer slice of Christmas 2027.
It runs month by month, September to December, with gift guides, client thank-yous and the four-day break along the way. Paint pops up once, near the end.
Why Christmas 2027 belongs to the September planners
Shoppers are moving earlier. In Christmas gift buying research released 03/12/2025, the Australian Retailers Association and Roy Morgan found nearly one in three shoppers (29 per cent) were buying gifts earlier than the year before, while only 8 per cent were leaving it later. Gift spending was forecast at $12 billion AUD, and Australians aged 35 to 49 were the biggest individual spenders, averaging $853 each.
The parcels tell the same story. Australia Post's wrap of its peak season, published 19/01/2026, counted more than 110 million parcels delivered across November and December 2025. Its busiest day was Monday 08/12/2025, with 3.3 million parcels in a single day, more than a fortnight before Christmas.
Then there's the 2027 calendar. Christmas Day is a Saturday, so both states get additional public holidays on Monday 27/12 and Tuesday 28/12. Queensland state schools finish on Friday 10/12/2027 and most NSW public schools on Monday 20/12/2027, so the two states slide into holiday mode ten days apart. December is for doing, not deciding. The deciding happens in September.
The four-month Christmas plan, September to December
| Month | 2027 dates to work around | Jobs for the month |
|---|---|---|
| September | Father's Day 05/09. QLD spring holidays from 18/09, NSW from 27/09 | Pick three hero gifts and your price bands. Order stock. Approach partners for bundles. Ask staff about December leave now. |
| October | Shared long weekend 02/10 to 04/10. NSW clocks go forward on 03/10, Queensland's don't. Halloween Sunday 31/10 | Photograph the gift guide. Send corporate clients an order form. Open party season bookings. Set email send times for each state's clock. |
| November | Black Friday 26/11, Cyber Monday 29/11 | Publish the gift guide in the first week. Lock corporate orders. Collect opt-ins for December reminders. Publish your postage and pick-up cut-offs. |
| December | QLD schools finish 10/12, NSW 20/12. QLD part-day holiday from 6pm on 24/12. Four-day break 25/12 to 28/12 | Client thank-yous out in week one. Push e-gift cards from 20/12. Post holiday hours everywhere. |
Wait until Halloween is done before the tinsel goes up in the window, but have the planning finished long before. The rest of the year's key dates live in our marketing calendar 2027. Before you lock anything in, check the state sources: Queensland's public holiday list, the NSW public holiday list, and the education departments' Queensland term dates and NSW term dates.
Black Friday lands right as your gift guide goes live, and whether to join in without hacking into your prices is a whole conversation of its own, covered in our Black Friday marketing ideas for 2027.
Build a gift guide people actually shop from
A gift guide is one of the hardest-working pages you'll publish all year, as long as it answers the only question the buyer has: what on earth do I get them?
- Sort by person, not product. "For the host", "for the sister-in-law you barely know", "for the neighbour who waters your plants" and "for the one who has everything" do more selling than "candles" and "skincare".
- Use two or three price bands that match real budgets, and put the price on every item.
- Shoot it in a summer Christmas. Your customers' Christmas involves a ceiling fan, a seafood platter and a pool towel, not a snowy cabin.
- Print the deadlines on every page: last day to order for postage, last day for click and collect, and the fact that e-gift cards arrive instantly.
On postage, Australia Post publishes its Christmas sending dates each year. For Christmas 2026, the cut-off for metro Parcel Post between Queensland and NSW is Monday 21/12/2026 and for Express Post Wednesday 23/12/2026, with extra time needed outside metro areas. Check the 2027 list when it lands and set your own cut-off a couple of days earlier.
If you sell gift cards, know the rules. The ACCC's gift card guidance explains that cards bought since 01/11/2019 generally must be redeemable for at least three years, must show the expiry date prominently and can't carry fees after purchase, such as activation or inactivity fees.

Christmas marketing ideas by business type
Cafés, bakeries and food producers
Sell the Christmas morning nobody has to cook. Take pre-orders for pastry boxes collected on Friday 24/12, build a hamper that survives the drive to the rellies, or offer a "bring a plate" platter for the party season. Our cafe marketing ideas go deeper on sampling and offers that fill tables.
Boutiques, gift and homewares shops
Run booked personal shopping half-hours for people who dread the shops. A three-question note about the recipient, a shortlist ready when they arrive, everything wrapped on the way out. More on styling-led events is in our boutique marketing ideas.
Salons, spas and beauty
Party season fills the diary from late November, so give existing clients first pick of those weeks before you open them to everyone. Then sell treatment vouchers as gifts with booking windows from mid-January, when the appointment book needs it.
Trades and home services
Nobody gifts a plumbing callout, but plenty of people want the house sorted before the visitors arrive. Run a "ready for the rellies" list: aircon service, pressure cleaning, the ceiling fan that wobbles, the tap that drips. Set a late-November booking deadline and stick to it.
Venues, caterers and hire businesses
Here your customer is the person organising somebody else's Christmas do. Publish packages in September with clear inclusions, deposit terms and minimum numbers, and only say "dates are filling" when they really are. Then make the organiser look good with a one-page plan for the night they can forward to the boss.
Client thank-yous that don't end up in the recycling
By mid-December, plenty of business customers are buried in hampers. A few ways to stand out from the pile:
- Make it local, with a card saying which business in your town made what.
- Write by hand. Twenty handwritten cards that mention something real from the year beat two hundred with a scanned signature.
- Gift the team, not just the boss. The person who answered your calls all year deserves the chocolates too.
- Give a night, not a thing. An evening out with a friend is remembered long after the shortbread runs out.
Tax is where good intentions get expensive, so this is general information only. The ATO's guide to common entertainment scenarios for business says there's no fringe benefits tax on benefits provided to clients, and that a Christmas gift to an employee worth less than $300 per person generally doesn't attract FBT. Deductibility is a separate question, and parties and nights out fall under the ATO's entertainment rules, so run the plan past your accountant before you order two hundred of anything.
The four-day break, opening hours and December rosters
Christmas 2027 gives both states a four-day break from Saturday 25/12 to Tuesday 28/12, and Queensland adds a part-day public holiday from 6pm to midnight on Christmas Eve. The rules differ by state.
| Date | Queensland | NSW |
|---|---|---|
| Fri 24/12/2027, Christmas Eve | Public holiday 6pm to midnight, not a closed day for shops | Ordinary day |
| Sat 25/12/2027, Christmas Day | Public holiday, a closed day for non-exempt shops | Public holiday and restricted trading day, most shops closed unless exempt |
| Sun 26/12/2027, Boxing Day | Public holiday, not a closed day | Public holiday, retail shops may trade if staff freely elect to work |
| Mon 27/12 and Tue 28/12/2027 | Additional public holidays | Additional public holidays, and the Monday is not a restricted trading day |
Exemptions vary by shop type and area, so check Business Queensland's shop trading hours and the NSW Government's rules on trading on public holidays.
Rosters next. The Fair Work Ombudsman's guide to end-of-year rules and entitlements, published 13/10/2025, explains that you can direct staff to take annual leave during a shutdown if their modern award or enterprise agreement allows it, or, for staff covered by neither, if the direction is reasonable. Either way it needs to be in writing and within the required notice period. Staff can also refuse a request to work a public holiday on reasonable grounds. Ask early, and roster fairly.
Then post your hours in five places by 01/12: your Google Business Profile, a website banner, social media, your email footer and the front door. The customer who finds you shut on 27/12 without warning may not come back.
And don't write off the days after Christmas. The ARA and Roy Morgan's Boxing Day forecast, released 24/12/2025, put the post-Christmas week (25/12 to 31/12) at $3.832 billion nationally, with gift card redemptions among the drivers. If you sold gift cards, give those recipients a reason to come in early, such as a small extra with the first visit.
Swap the Christmas card for a night they'll talk about
Paint is mobile paint and sip with the volume up. The team brings the whole night to a venue in Queensland or NSW, from the hosts and canvases to the music, with a live singalong and a few rounds of trivia filling the gaps while each layer dries. The guests are mostly women, from their thirties into their nineties, and they tend to arrive in packs: sisters, mums, best friends, half the office. The biggest nights go well past 100: Springfield, south-west of Brisbane, has filled a room of 151, and Cessnock in the Hunter 110.
Here's how that could look at Christmas, in two made-up examples:
- Picture a regional accounting practice that posts three hundred cards nobody keeps. Instead, it takes over a night and invites its small business clients to bring a friend, every seat on the practice. Our page on brand takeovers and themed nights covers how client thank-you nights and gifted seats work.
- Picture a garden centre that wants its name front of mind when the Christmas plants get bought. Through sponsored artwork, guests paint a summer Christmas scene, a jug of NSW Christmas bush on a sunny verandah table, in the centre's colours. Long after the tree goes back in its box, the canvas is still hanging in someone's hallway.

Your Christmas marketing questions, unwrapped
Is September too early to start Christmas marketing?
For customers, sometimes. For your planning, never. September is when you pick hero gifts, order stock, line up partners and sort December rosters. The ARA and Roy Morgan's 2025 research found 29 per cent of shoppers buying earlier than the year before, so a gift guide that's live in early November is right on time.
How many products should go in a Christmas gift guide?
Fewer than you'd think. Twelve to twenty products, sorted by who they're for and grouped into two or three price bands, is plenty for most local businesses. Only include items you hold deep stock of or can restock quickly, because a guide full of sold-out products sends shoppers somewhere else. Finish with a gift card for the buyer who still can't decide.
What can we give clients instead of a hamper?
Something local, personal or shared. A gift made by another business in your town, a handwritten card that mentions something real from the year, or an invitation to a night out with a friend will all stand out from the December hamper pile. Send it in the first week of December, before offices wind down, and check the tax side with your accountant first.
Do we have to open over the Christmas 2027 break?
No, and in some cases you can't. In NSW, Christmas Day is a restricted trading day, and on Boxing Day retail shops may trade if staff freely elect to work. In Queensland, non-exempt shops must close on Christmas Day. If you plan to close for the whole break, check whether your modern award or enterprise agreement lets you direct staff to take annual leave, and give them plenty of notice.
How do we market Christmas to customers who don't celebrate it?
Talk about the season as well as the day. "End of year", "summer break" and "thanks for this year" include everyone, and plenty of people simply want a gift for a colleague, a night out with friends or the house sorted before the holidays. Let subscribers opt out of Christmas emails, and resist sending one every day for six weeks.
Get on the Christmas list early
If your customers are the women who write the gift lists, book the tables and organise the end-of-year thank-yous, let's put your business in the room before December takes over.
