Father's Day marketing ideas for 2027: market to the women who do the buying
Father's Day 2027 falls on Sunday 05/09/2027, and the person at your counter in August, phone in one hand and a half-finished list in the other, is rarely the man being celebrated. These Father's Day marketing ideas start from that fact. In plenty of homes the present is picked, paid for and wrapped by a partner, a grown-up daughter, a mum or a sister, so the smartest campaigns are written for her first.
Inside: the latest spending numbers, a July to September plan for QLD and NSW, ideas by business type and how to handle a day that isn't easy for everyone. Every idea works with or without Paint.
Who's really buying for Dad
The freshest numbers come from the Roy Morgan and Australian Retail Council Father's Day survey, released on 03/09/2026 after polling 4,977 Australians aged 18 and over. It found 5.5 million Australians, or 23 per cent, planned to buy a gift, up from 20 per cent in 2025. Spending was forecast at around $730 million AUD, but the average planned spend slipped from $145 to $135. More shoppers, smaller budgets.
Among buyers who already knew what they'd choose, 29 per cent planned food and alcohol, 19 per cent clothing, shoes or sleepwear, 14 per cent an experience such as dinner or a trip, and 11 per cent a voucher or gift card. Across all Australians, 37 per cent, or about 8.7 million people, planned a celebration breakfast, lunch or dinner, at home or out.
Around 12 per cent, or 2.8 million people, were shopping for a man who isn't their birth father: the stepdad, the grandad, the father-in-law, the uncle who taught everyone to reverse park. And the 2025 edition of the survey, released in August 2025, noted that older Australians keep Father's Day high on the list while younger groups tighten their belts.
The survey counts buyers, not genders
Honest bit: neither release splits buyers by gender, so be wary of anyone quoting the share of gifts women buy. The ABS does show who runs more errands. Its How Australians Use Their Time release, published 17/12/2025, found 25.8 per cent of women did some shopping on their diary day, compared with 18.3 per cent of men. The gift run is one more errand, and in a lot of households it lands on her list.
What that means for your marketing
Write for the person choosing, not the person unwrapping. She may be buying for a partner, her own dad and a father-in-law at once. So:
- Help her decide fast, with picks grouped by personality rather than by product code.
- Show prices plainly, including at least one option under the $135 average.
- Take the risk out of sizes, flavours and taste with easy swaps.
- Keep the copy open to everyone, because sons, husbands and mates shop too.

A July to September plan for Father's Day 2027
Father's Day is the first Sunday in September, so planning starts in the winter school holidays. Dates below are from the official Queensland school holiday dates and NSW school holiday dates.
| Dates | On the QLD and NSW calendar | Your Father's Day jobs |
|---|---|---|
| 05/07/2027 to 18/07/2027 | QLD winter school holidays end 11/07; NSW holidays run 05/07 to 16/07 | Review May. Pick a hero offer and two price points. Approach partner businesses. |
| 19/07/2027 to 25/07/2027 | Christmas in July lands on Sunday 25/07 | Keep Father's Day out of Christmas in July posts. Order stock and printed cards. |
| 26/07/2027 to 08/08/2027 | NSW Bank Holiday on Monday 02/08 (bank branches close, but it isn't a public holiday) | Photograph the range on real people, with consent. Write the gift guide. Set up e-vouchers. |
| 09/08/2027 to 15/08/2027 | Royal Queensland Show holiday on Wednesday 11/08, Brisbane area only | Give regulars a first look. Brief the team. |
| 16/08/2027 to 22/08/2027 | Three weeks out | Go wide across email, social and in store. Publish order-by dates. |
| 23/08/2027 to 29/08/2027 | Two weeks out | Push experiences and vouchers. Open Sunday bookings. |
| 30/08/2027 to 04/09/2027 | Final week, ending with Saturday 04/09 | Midweek reminders. Instant e-vouchers and pre-wrapped gifts ready. |
| 05/09/2027 | Father's Day, not a public holiday in either state | Staff up for brunch and lunch. |
| 06/09/2027 to 08/10/2027 | QLD spring holidays 18/09 to 04/10; NSW spring holidays 27/09 to 08/10 | Thank buyers, invite opt-ins for Christmas, and keep room for experience vouchers. |
Two state quirks. NSW winter holidays run to 16/07, after Queensland's end on 11/07, so a 12/07 email finds NSW parents still juggling. And the Brisbane show holiday on 11/08 is local, so check the Queensland public holiday list before a Wednesday send to Brisbane, and the NSW public holiday list over the border. Every other date for the year is in our marketing calendar 2027.
Turn your May offer into a September one
If you ran something for Mother's Day, the hard work is done. Don't copy and paste it, and don't start from scratch. Skipped May? Our Mother's Day 2027 playbook has the mechanics in one spot.
Keep the bones
Pre-order cut-offs, bundles with neighbouring businesses, instant e-vouchers and bookings dated after the big day all carry across, and May customers already know them.
Rewrite the brief
In May, a daughter buying for her mum usually knows exactly what she loves. In September she might be shopping for a father-in-law she rarely sees, or a stepdad who insists he wants nothing. Give her more help: a "who's he like?" guide (the cook, the tinkerer, the reader, the impossible one) and a swap policy she can see before she pays.
Reset the price ladder
The same research team put average planned Mother's Day spend at $144 in its May 2026 Mother's Day survey, against $135 for Father's Day four months later. Build one clear option below the average and one hero above it, then add value with engraving, wrapping or free local delivery rather than cutting the price.
Father's Day marketing ideas by type of business
Cafes, restaurants and pubs
With 37 per cent planning a celebration meal, Sunday 05/09/2027 is a booking day, so open reservations in July and set a menu for big tables. Plenty of families have two or three father figures to see on one Sunday, so sell Saturday night as well.
Bottle shops, breweries, wineries and food producers
Food and alcohol topped the 2026 list at 29 per cent. Build a tasting pack she can order online in two minutes, or pair a local cheesemaker with a local drop. Alcohol offers stay adults only, and our guide to drinks brand activations covers the responsible-marketing basics.
Menswear, footwear and outdoor stores
Clothing came second at 19 per cent, and the buyer's biggest fear is the wrong size. Put a swap card and gift receipt in every bag. A no-fuss swap is worth more to her than a few dollars off.
Hardware, garden and auto businesses
Tools, hardware and gardening made up 8 per cent of planned gifts. Let him build a wish list in store that the family can shop from, and sell gift cards with a printed "project list" so the card feels like a plan.
Barbers, massage, wellness and other services
Vouchers sat at 11 per cent. Present them properly and let the recipient choose the date. A massage therapist can sell a back-to-back booking for two, so she gets a turn as well.
Printers, engravers, photographers and makers
Personalised items came in at 7 per cent, and they live or die on lead time, so publish a mid-August order-by date and repeat it everywhere.
The gift she can give: time instead of another thing
Experiences made up 14 per cent of planned gifts in 2026, and they solve a real problem: he already owns the mug, the wallet and the tongs. What she can give, that he'd never buy himself, is a plan with her name in it.
- Sell it for two. A brewery tour, a golf lesson, a cooking session or a scenic flight reads better as "you and me" than "you, alone".
- Put a date on it, such as a weekend in the spring school holidays.
- Give her something to hand over on Sunday, like a boxed voucher or printed itinerary.
Selling gift cards? The ACCC's gift card guidance says most cards sold since 01/11/2019 can't carry post-purchase fees such as activation or account-keeping charges. General information only, so check it against your setup.

When Father's Day is a hard day
Not every customer gets a happy September. For some it's the first one after a funeral. For others it's a dad they don't speak to, one they never met, or a stepdad who did the heavy lifting and rarely got a card. A cheery countdown can land like a thump.
- Segment before you send. Email last year's gift buyers, not your entire list.
- Write subject lines that inform. "Gift ideas for the men on your list" beats a shouty "Don't forget Dad!"
- Rewrite the counter script. "Who are you shopping for today?" works for everyone. "What are you getting your dad?" can floor someone.
- Name the wider family. The ARC's 2026 release wished "dads, grandfathers and father figures" a happy day, a tidy model for your copy.
- Offer an off-switch, like the skip-this-campaign email in our Mother's Day playbook. Under the ACMA's spam rules for businesses, unsubscribes must be honoured within five working days.
Where a Paint night meets the Father's Day shopper
Paint is a mobile paint and sip night that brings hosts, canvases, a live singalong and trivia moments to venues across Queensland and NSW. More than 42,000 guests have joined in, mostly women from their thirties into their nineties, usually booked in with sisters, mums, friends and workmates. That's a room full of the people writing Father's Day lists, and August rooms can be big: on Saturday 01/08/2026, one night in Yeppoon filled 100 seats.
Two hypothetical examples:
- Picture a Mid North Coast menswear store tucking a card into every August goodie bag: free gift wrapping and a no-fuss size swap on Father's Day buys, tracked with a unique code. Here's how goodie bags and product sampling work on the night.
- A Townsville barbershop takes a spot in a late-August newsletter gift guide, selling a hot towel shave voucher she can buy in a couple of taps. See how newsletter and content placements run.
Partners are always introduced as partners, and each gathers its own opt-ins. If the dad on her list is in his seventies or eighties, read our baby boomer marketing guide first.
Father's Day marketing, answered
When should we start planning Father's Day 2027 marketing?
Early July 2027, about nine weeks out. The winter school holidays give you time to review May, choose an offer and line up partners, then order stock before August. Give regulars a first look in mid-August and go wide about three weeks before Sunday 05/09/2027. Personalised products need the earliest start, so publish a firm order-by date.
Is it OK to aim Father's Day marketing at women?
Yes, as long as you aim it at the buyer rather than a stereotype. Many gifts are chosen by partners, daughters, mums and sisters, so make choosing easy with clear prices, picks by personality and painless swaps. Keep the copy open to everyone with a list, because nobody likes being told what their gender supposedly wants.
Is Father's Day on the same date in Queensland and NSW?
Yes. Both states mark it on the first Sunday in September, which is 05/09/2027, and it isn't a public holiday in either. What differs is the run-up: NSW winter school holidays finish five days after Queensland's, and Brisbane has its own show holiday on Wednesday 11/08/2027.
Do Father's Day gift vouchers have to last three years?
Generally, yes. Under the ACCC's guidance, most gift cards sold from November 2019 onwards need a minimum three-year life, a clearly shown expiry date and no fees once bought. Some promotional and loyalty cards are exempt. Treat this as general information and confirm the details with the ACCC or your adviser before printing.
Is Father's Day worth it if we don't sell gifts?
Often, yes. More than a third of Australians planned a celebration meal in 2026, so cafes, restaurants and pubs have a booking day. Service businesses can sell time as a voucher, and anyone can use the date as a friendly reason to get back in touch with customers who have opted in.
Get on her list before August
