Valentine's Day marketing ideas for 2027: couples, Galentine's and everyone in between

Valentine's Day 2027 falls on Sunday 14/02/2027, with Galentine's Day on the Saturday before it, and that one calendar quirk reshapes every sensible list of Valentine's Day marketing ideas this season. Instead of one frantic Sunday dinner rush, a Queensland or NSW business gets a three-night weekend with a different crowd turning up each night.

Below: the four groups who actually show up (or very deliberately don't), the weekend mapped day by day, ideas by business type and the copywriting habit that quietly shrinks your audience. Paint gets one short section towards the end, and the rest is yours to use either way.

Four crowds, one weekend: who's celebrating

The Australian Retail Council and Roy Morgan Valentine's Day survey, released on 11/02/2026 after polling 6,479 Australians aged 18 and over, found just 12 per cent planned to buy a Valentine's gift. That's around 3 million people, down four points on the year before. Those who were buying planned to spend an average of $152 AUD each, for an expected total of $550 million.

Flip that over: close to nine in ten adults weren't buying a Valentine's gift at all. They haven't vanished for the weekend, they're just not shopping for a partner. A couples-only campaign talks to the smallest crowd in the room.

Couples who want to mark it

Couples still carry the spend. Flowers (40 per cent), chocolates and alcohol (33 per cent) and jewellery (16 per cent) topped the planned purchases, and two-thirds of people celebrating planned a meal, at home or out. Men were twice as likely as women to be buying a gift (16 per cent against 8 per cent).

Age changes the plan. Australians aged 18 to 34 were the most likely to book a restaurant table (62 per cent), against around 39 to 40 per cent of those 35 and over, and Queensland recorded the highest rate of dining out of any state, at 58 per cent of people celebrating. So a Brisbane bistro and a Port Macquarie deli can both win the weekend: one sells the table, the other sells the night in.

The Galentine's crowd

Saturday 13/02/2027 is Galentine's Day, an informal celebration of friendship and a perfectly good excuse for a brunch, a long lunch or a night out with the girls. We couldn't find a reliable Australian survey that sizes it, so plan from what you can see: group bookings, shared plates, matching photos and one heroic organiser wrangling the group chat. In 2027 it's a Saturday, the easiest night of the weekend to fill.

That organiser is your real customer. Make her job painless with one booking link, one price per head, a clear deposit and a way for each friend to pay her own share. If she looks good for picking you, she books you again.

Self-gifters and the happily single

Roughly one household in four is a single person: 24.7 per cent of households in the 2021 Census QuickStats for Queensland and 25.0 per cent in the 2021 Census QuickStats for New South Wales. Living alone isn't the same as being single, and single isn't the same as glum. Plenty of people use the weekend to buy the earrings, book the facial or open the good bottle for themselves. Speak to them as people with taste and money, not a problem to fix. "Treat yourself" works with a wink. Forever-alone jokes never do.

People who'd rather skip it

For some customers the weekend stings: a partner who has died, a recent separation. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare estimates that 15 per cent of Australians were experiencing loneliness in 2024, based on HILDA survey data. Those people are on your email list too.

Offer a Valentine's opt-out in late January and check your email platform honours it. The Australian Communications and Media Authority says every commercial message needs a working unsubscribe, actioned within five working days. A theme opt-out goes beyond that legal floor and keeps people subscribed for everything else.

The shape of a Sunday Valentine's weekend

When Valentine's lands midweek, everything piles onto one night. In 2027 the weekend spreads demand across three. The dates below are checked against the official Queensland public holiday dates and NSW public holiday dates.

Date What's happening Your move
Tue 26/01/2027 Australia Day public holiday in both states Summer's last hurrah. Hold Valentine's posts until it's over and send the opt-out email that week.
Mon 01/02/2027 to Sun 07/02/2027 Two weeks to go Launch. Publish menus, pre-orders, engraving and delivery cut-offs, and open Galentine's group bookings.
Mon 08/02/2027 to Thu 11/02/2027 The final working week Remind couples, nudge organisers to lock numbers, confirm staff for all three nights.
Fri 12/02/2027 The last weekday before Valentine's Workplace flower and gift deliveries land today, since nobody's at the office on Sunday. Early date nights for couples dodging the Sunday crowd.
Sat 13/02/2027 Galentine's Day Brunches, long lunches and nights out with friends. Also the last Saturday for gift shoppers who left it late.
Sun 14/02/2027 Valentine's Day Breakfast in bed, long lunches and dinners. Confirm Sunday trading hours and rosters well ahead.
Mon 15/02/2027 The morning after Say thanks, note what sold out and what sat still, and start on International Women's Day, Monday 08/03/2027.

NSW is on daylight saving in February and Queensland isn't, so a 7pm sitting in Tweed Heads is 6pm a few streets away in Coolangatta. Border businesses, say which time you mean. And with students back in both states before the weekend (see the Queensland school term dates and NSW school term dates pages), Valentine's sits in an ordinary working fortnight with no holiday getaways competing for the budget. For every other date, keep our marketing calendar 2027 open in another tab.

Valentine's Day marketing ideas for each kind of local business

Restaurants, cafes and bars

Sell three different nights rather than one crowded one:

  • Friday: an "early Valentine's" set menu for couples who'd like a calmer room.
  • Saturday: Galentine's share plates for tables of four to ten, with a group price per head and a single deposit.
  • Sunday: a long lunch for couples who'd rather be home before dark, and a dinner sitting for the under-35s most likely to book.

Include something extra, such as a welcome drink or a dessert to share, instead of shaving the price. If drinks are a big part of the offer, the responsible service basics in our guide to drinks brand activation ideas apply just as much on your own floor.

Florists

In a Sunday year, Friday deliveries are the crunch, so publish a Thursday order cut-off early. Then build a Galentine's posy: a small bunch sold in fives, so one friend can hand them around the brunch table. A single stem with a handwritten tag at the counter catches the self-gifter.

Jewellers and gift shops

Jewellery made up 16 per cent of planned gifts, and engraving needs lead time, so put the cut-off on the counter card and in your email subject line. Friendship pieces sold in sets of three or four turn one Galentine's sale into several, and a "the one you've had your eye on" display gives the self-purchaser permission.

Salons, spas and beauty

The getting-ready hour sells on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. Offer group blow-dries or nails for Galentine's crews before lunch, and a solo quiet hour on Sunday for anyone sitting the day out. Taking products beyond the salon? Our beauty brand activation ideas cover sampling and honest claims.

Boutiques and retail

A Galentine's outfit is a genuine purchase: something new for Saturday's photos. Style a rail by occasion (brunch, long lunch, night out) rather than "for her", with pieces that earn their keep long after the weekend. More styling ideas sit in our boutique marketing ideas.

Food producers and the night-in market

Fewer people 35 and over planned to book a restaurant table, so sell that crowd the night in: a dinner kit for two with dessert, a candle and a playlist card, ready for Saturday collection. A chocolate maker can package a tasting flight for two, which feels more like an experience than another heart-shaped box.

Photographers and other services

Couples portraits and friendship shoots suit the weekend as vouchers dated for March, after the rush. If you sell gift vouchers, the ACCC's gift card guidance explains the rule: since 01/11/2019, most gift cards have to stay usable for three years or more, and the expiry date has to be easy to see.

The couple-only trap

The most common Valentine's mistake isn't a weak offer. It's copy that quietly assumes every reader is half of a couple, usually a man buying for a woman. On the ARC and Roy Morgan figures, fewer than one adult in eight was buying a Valentine's gift at all, so copy written only for that reader leaves most of your list feeling they wandered into the wrong shop.

The fixes cost nothing:

  • Write "for someone you love" instead of "for your other half", and let that someone be a friend, a sister or the reader herself.
  • Arrange gift guides by budget or by interest, not "for him" and "for her".
  • Show couples of different ages, backgrounds and genders, preferably real customers with written permission.
  • Give the Galentine's crowd and the self-gifter their own headline, not a footnote under the couples offer.
  • Retire every joke made at the expense of single people.

Inclusive copy isn't tiptoeing, it's counting: every reader you don't shut out might book. If your Galentine's organiser is a woman in her forties or fifties, our guide to marketing to Gen X women has more on the tone that earns her trust.

Why Galentine's suits a Paint night

A Paint night rolls into the venue with hosts, canvases, music, a live singalong and trivia moments, and runs for up to 3 hours. Its guests are mostly women, from their thirties into their nineties, booking with friends, sisters, mums and workmates, which reads almost exactly like a Galentine's guest list. The rooms get big, too: Springfield's 151 guests is the biggest night so far.

Two hypothetical ways a business could join a Galentine's-season night:

  • Picture a florist shaping a Galentine's canvas: pink and red blooms in a jug on a sunny windowsill, tied with the florist's signature ribbon. Guests take it home and hang it, and the florist lives on the wall all year. Here's how sponsored artwork comes together.
  • Picture a chocolate maker presenting the night, named from the stage and a tasting box for the canvas the host picks as the standout. Guests are always told when a partner presents a night. The details are on the presented-by nights and in-room moments page.

What local businesses ask about Valentine's Day

Is Valentine's Day worth marketing if most of my customers aren't in a couple?

Yes, if you widen the brief. Fewer than one adult in eight planned to buy a Valentine's gift in the ARC and Roy Morgan survey released in February 2026, so a couples-only campaign misses most of your customers. Add an offer for friends celebrating Galentine's on Saturday 13/02/2027 and one for people treating themselves.

When should a local business start promoting Valentine's Day 2027?

Plan in January and launch around Monday 01/02/2027, once Australia Day is done and routines return in both states. That gives two clear weeks for menus, pre-orders and group bookings. Florists, jewellers and anyone engraving or delivering should publish cut-offs at launch, because in a Sunday year the real deadline is usually the Thursday or Friday before.

How do I market Galentine's Day without it feeling forced?

Sell the plan, not the label. Friends want a reason to get together and someone to make organising easy, so offer a group price per head, one booking link, a clear deposit and something worth photographing. Keep the tone warm and playful, and let the friendship be the hero of every post.

What if my business has nothing to do with romance?

Skip the hearts and join through friendship or self-care instead. A bookshop can run a Galentine's swap shelf, a garden centre can pot up "plant friends" sold in pairs, and a mechanic can offer a free safety check before a girls' road trip. If none of that fits, sit the weekend out and save your budget for a date where your customers already think of you.

Do Valentine's gift vouchers have to last three years?

Mostly, yes. Under the Australian Consumer Law, a gift card or voucher sold since 01/11/2019 generally has to stay redeemable for three years or more, and its expiry date must be shown prominently. Exemptions exist, including cards donated for promotional purposes and cards that are part of a customer loyalty program. This is general information only, so check the ACCC's guidance or ask your own adviser before you print a single voucher.
