Long weekend marketing ideas for 2027: every QLD and NSW long weekend, and how to use it

Long weekend marketing ideas have a habit of turning up on the Thursday before, scribbled on the back of a docket. 2027 deserves better. Queensland and New South Wales each get six official long weekends, five of them shared, plus an unofficial four-dayer thanks to Australia Day landing on a Tuesday.

Below: every 2027 long weekend for both states in one table, a tactic or two for each, who's actually in town, and what public holiday pay means for your rosters. It's for cafés, boutiques, salons, hardware stores and anyone tired of losing three days at a time to the barbecue.

Every 2027 long weekend in QLD and NSW at a glance

Dates come from the official Queensland public holiday list and the NSW public holiday list, with school breaks from the Queensland school holiday dates and the NSW school holiday dates.

The Royal Queensland Show holiday on Wednesday 11/08/2027 is midweek and Brisbane-area only. Queensland's Christmas Eve part-day holiday runs from 6pm to midnight on Friday 24/12/2027. Queensland's 2027 regional show holidays weren't published at the time of writing, so check yours. Gifting days, school terms and the rest of the year sit in our marketing calendar 2027.

Locals at home, visitors in town: two weekends in one

Every long weekend splits your customers. Some pack the car and leave, some stay put with time on their hands, and the towns people drive to fill with visitors who don't know where anything is.

Short breaks are the bread and butter of domestic travel. Tourism Research Australia's Domestic Tourism Statistics results for the December quarter 2025 found 21.0 million overnight trips, or 71 per cent, ran for one to three nights. That's the exact shape of a long weekend, and 30 to 44 year-olds took the biggest slice of those short trips, at 27 per cent.

Visitors spend on the everyday stuff, too. TRA's domestic tourism results for the June quarter 2026 show Australians on overnight trips spent $3.8 billion AUD on takeaway and restaurant meals, $2.7 billion on petrol and $1.5 billion on groceries and self catering. That's the café, the servo and the corner store.

What the stay-at-home locals want

  • Something good, close by: a long lunch, a slow breakfast, the night out with friends they keep promising each other.
  • Time for the jobs list. The garden and the spare room finally get attention, so hardware, nurseries and homewares can lean in.
  • Proof you're open. Locals assume the worst on a public holiday, so tell them early.

What the visitors want

  • Directions to the good stuff: where locals eat, where to park, what to do when it rains.
  • Easy basics: groceries, fuel, a pharmacy and a decent coffee for the drive home.
  • A reason to come back, such as your card with a return offer.

If your trade leans on visiting friends and relatives, the locals doing the hosting are your real audience, and our marketing ideas for tourism operators show how to win them over.

If your town fills up, reach visitors before they arrive through your Google Business Profile, accommodation hosts and the visitor centre.

Drivers matter too. Transport for NSW applies double demerit points across holiday periods, and its published 2026 periods covered Australia Day, Easter, Anzac Day, King's Birthday and the October Labour Day weekend, plus Christmas and New Year. On a drive route, a free coffee for the driver with any purchase makes you the friendly stop.

Long weekend marketing ideas, one weekend at a time

New Year: Friday 01/01 to Sunday 03/01

Both states are deep in summer holidays and most people want slow mornings. Build a genuinely useful "fresh start" bundle, such as a booking for later in January, and promote it from Boxing Day while everyone's scrolling on the couch. Open on New Year's Day? Say so loudly.

Australia Day: the unofficial four-dayer, Saturday 23/01 to Tuesday 26/01

Many people will take Monday 25/01 off, making it the oddest trading day of the year: half your customers on leave, half at work wondering where everyone went. Pick weekend or weekday hours for it and publish them a fortnight out. In Queensland, Term 1 starts Wednesday 27/01, so "one last weekend" has real pull. Keep the wording inclusive, since not every customer marks the day the same way.

Easter: Friday 26/03 to Monday 29/03

Queensland's autumn break starts on Good Friday, while the NSW break doesn't start until 12/04. Good Friday and Easter Sunday trading rules differ between the states, so check yours before printing hours. The tactic: own Thursday 25/03 with a pre-order pick-up window, then send a "we're back" message on Tuesday 30/03, when fridges are empty.

Anzac: Saturday 24/04 to Monday 26/04

Handle this one gently, because Sunday 25/04 is tightly controlled. The NSW Government confirmed in April 2025 that retailers that used to close until 1pm on Anzac Day now stay closed all day, with some exemptions. Queensland's Anzac Day trading hours keep non-exempt shops closed, independent retail shops shut until 1pm and places of public amusement closed until half past one. The word is protected too: commercial use of "Anzac" needs permission from the Minister for Veterans' Affairs. Under the NSW public holiday trading rules, Monday 26/04 is not a restricted trading day. Leave Sunday alone, check Monday if you're in Queensland, and put your energy into Saturday 24/04.

Queensland Labour Day: Saturday 01/05 to Monday 03/05

Queensland only, and six days before Mother's Day on 09/05, so it's a gift-shopping weekend in disguise. Get your range out before the Friday and make Monday a click and collect day. Our Mother's Day marketing ideas for 2027 has the full countdown.

NSW King's Birthday: Saturday 12/06 to Monday 14/06

NSW only, and the first long weekend of winter. In the cooler tablelands and Central West towns, sell warmth: fireside tables, slow-cooked menus, a cosy night out with the girls. It sits a fortnight before the end of the financial year, so B2B sellers should skip launching that weekend and hit send on Tuesday 15/06.

The October long weekend: Saturday 02/10 to Monday 04/10

Same Monday, different names: King's Birthday in Queensland, Labour Day in NSW. It closes the Queensland spring break and lands mid-way through the NSW one, so the whole east coast is on the move. One wrinkle: NSW daylight saving is due to start on Sunday 03/10, putting NSW an hour ahead of Queensland from that weekend. Taking bookings across the border? Show both states' times.

Christmas: Saturday 25/12 to Tuesday 28/12

With Christmas Day and Boxing Day on the weekend, Monday 27/12 and Tuesday 28/12 become additional public holidays in both states. Tuesday is the sleeper: visitors are still in town, locals are restless and plenty of businesses stay shut. Open on 28/12 and you may have the street to yourself. Put those hours in your last email before Christmas.

Rosters, public holiday pay and opening hours

A long weekend only wins if the extra trade beats the extra wages. This is general information, not advice, so check your obligations with the Fair Work Ombudsman or your accountant.

  • Start from the rules. Fair Work's guidance on not working on public holidays says employees have a right to be away from work on a public holiday. You can ask staff to work, but the request must be reasonable, and staff can refuse on reasonable grounds. Ask early and in writing.
  • Know what the holiday costs. Fair Work's public holidays page notes that working one may bring extra pay, such as public holiday rates. Check your staff's pay guide with Fair Work's Pay and Conditions Tool before setting hours.
  • Count every Christmas holiday. In 2027 the weekend Christmas Day and Boxing Day stay public holidays, and both states add Monday 27/12 and Tuesday 28/12. Check how your modern award or enterprise agreement treats all four.
  • Roster for the shoulder days. The Thursday before and the Tuesday after can out-trade the holiday itself, so check your sales history.
  • Give one person the job of changing your hours, a week out, in one sitting. A listing that still says "open" sends customers to a locked door.

A Paint night in your long weekend plan

Paint runs mobile paint and sip nights of up to 3 hours in venues up and down Queensland and NSW: a host on the mic, a canvas each, a singalong loud enough to rattle the windows and trivia while the paint dries. Most of the room is women from their thirties into their nineties, booked in as groups of sisters, mums, friends or workmates, and more than 42,000 guests have come along so far. Big rooms travel, too: Sunshine Beach filled a night with 117 guests on an April 2026 Friday.

A few hypothetical ways it could fit a long weekend plan:

Long weekend marketing questions, answered

Which 2027 long weekends do Queensland and NSW share?

Five: New Year (01/01 to 03/01), Easter (26/03 to 29/03), Anzac (24/04 to 26/04), October (02/10 to 04/10, under different names) and Christmas (25/12 to 28/12). Queensland alone gets Labour Day on 03/05 and NSW alone gets King's Birthday on 14/06. Australia Day on Tuesday 26/01 becomes an unofficial four-day weekend for anyone who takes Monday off.

Should my business open on a public holiday Monday?

Only if the numbers stack up. Compare takings from your last few public holiday Mondays with the extra wages, using Fair Work's Pay and Conditions Tool for current rates. If the day usually limps, closing and saying so clearly is fine. If your town fills with visitors, opening while the neighbours are shut could make it a cracker of a day.

How far ahead should I promote a long weekend offer?

Two to three weeks for locals, and earlier for visitors, who need to know about you before they pack the car. Publish your opening hours at least a fortnight out, then remind people in the final three days. For the four-day weekends at Easter and Christmas, start sooner, because more days to fill means earlier plans.

Can I run an Anzac Day promotion?

It's best not to. The word "Anzac" is protected, and the Department of Veterans' Affairs says commercial use needs permission from the Minister for Veterans' Affairs. Anzac Day trading rules are strict in both states, too. Put your effort into Saturday 24/04, keep the Monday low-key, and never attach the word to a sale.

My town empties out on long weekends. What should I do?

Market to the people who stay, and to the ones coming home. Locals who skipped the road trip want something nearby, so a night out, a long lunch or a "staycation" bundle can work well. Then plan a welcome-back offer for the Tuesday, when travellers return to empty fridges and would love someone else to sort dinner.
