New year marketing ideas for 2027: how QLD and NSW businesses can start the year strong
The best new year marketing ideas rarely arrive in a boardroom. They turn up in January, somewhere between the last of the Christmas ham and the first "per my last email", when the phone goes quiet and you finally have time to think. This guide is for Queensland and NSW business owners who want to use that time well.
Inside: what January is really like for your customers, a plan you can build in one afternoon, January 2027 in both states side by side, ideas by type of business and the traps that turn a fresh start into a flat February.
January: the till is quiet, the heads are busy
Out-of-office replies stack up and half your regulars seem to be at the beach. In its analysis of hours worked in January 2023, released 16/02/2023, the ABS called early January "the seasonal peak in people taking annual leave", with around 43 per cent of employed people working reduced or no hours in that first fortnight because they were on leave.
A quiet till doesn't mean a quiet mind. A Finder survey of 1,006 Australians in December 2025 found 71 per cent had made a resolution for 2026, led by improving fitness (32 per cent), with sleeping more on 19 per cent of lists. Money loomed larger still: 85 per cent had set a financial goal, 53 per cent wanted to save more and 32 per cent planned to spend less.
So January's customer is at home, restless, writing lists and watching the bank balance. That's a gift for a business with something useful to offer, and a trap for one shouting "SALE".
The fresh start feeling is real, and it comes back every Monday
Researchers call the January lift the fresh start effect. In their 2014 Management Science paper, Hengchen Dai, Katherine Milkman and Jason Riis found people were 145.3 per cent more likely than on an ordinary day to sign a goal contract on the commitment website stickK at the start of a new year. Smaller lifts showed up at the start of each new week (62.9 per cent) and month (23.6 per cent).
The honest takeaway: January motivation is a real tailwind, but it isn't a one-off. Offer a fresh start each month or season rather than cramming the year's hopes into four weeks.

Build your 2027 marketing plan in one afternoon
A year-long plan doesn't need a week of workshops. Block out three and a half hours, grab last year's numbers and a wall planner, and work through these six blocks.
| Time | The job | You walk away with |
|---|---|---|
| 30 minutes | Look back at 2026: best and worst months, where new customers came from, which offers sold and which sank | A keep list and a bin list |
| 30 minutes | Set three goals, each with a number and a deadline | Goals you can check honestly in June |
| 45 minutes | Mark your anchors: the dates your trade lives on, both states' school holidays, long weekends, your own launches | A wall planner with your peaks shaded |
| 45 minutes | Choose four tentpole campaigns, one a quarter, and count back six to eight weeks from each | Four campaigns with real kick-off dates |
| 30 minutes | Split the budget by quarter, keeping a slice free for the opportunity nobody saw coming | A spend plan that bends without breaking |
| 30 minutes | Book the boring bits: tidy the email list, collect photo permissions, set up review requests, diarise an April check-in | Reminders that make the plan happen |
Keep the goals blunt. "Grow the business" is a wish. "Sixty new bookings from the Sunshine Coast by 30/06/2027" is a goal, because in June you'll know. For more structure, the marketing plan guide and template on business.gov.au covers research, positioning, goals, strategy and budget. For the anchors, don't retype a calendar: our marketing calendar 2027 has every public holiday, school break and gifting day for both states, ready to shade.
On the email list, the ACMA's guidance on avoiding spam is plain: get consent, identify your business and make unsubscribing easy.

The Australia Day Tuesday
With 26/01/2027 on a Tuesday, plenty of people will be tempted to take Monday off and stretch it into a four-day weekend from Saturday 23/01. For a cafe, tour operator or beachside shop, that's a second mini-peak before the year gets serious, so post your opening hours early. Rostering staff on the public holiday? The Fair Work Ombudsman's public holiday information covers extra pay and the right to be absent.
The date itself deserves care. The National Australia Day Council notes that 26 January has multiple meanings: it is Australia Day for some and Survival Day for others, some Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Australians have mixed feelings about celebrating it, and some consider it a day of mourning. Promote the summer long weekend rather than building a sale around the date.
Two returns, a week apart
School return is when commutes, coffee orders and gym alarms reset across whole households, and in 2027 it happens twice, a week apart, so your "back to routine" message needs two launch dates. That bites hardest across the border. A southern Gold Coast business can be talking to a customer in Coolangatta and another in Tweed Heads who are a week apart on the school calendar and an hour apart on the clock, because NSW stays on daylight saving until 04/04/2027. Schedule posts and emails in each state's local time. If the Tweed, Ballina and Lismore are your patch, our page on advertising in the Northern Rivers goes deeper.
New year marketing ideas by business type
Cafes, restaurants and venues
Launch your loyalty card in back-to-routine week, so the first stamp lands on a workday habit. Sell a 2027 dinner club in January: one set night a month, booked and paid for now, filling twelve quiet Tuesdays in one go.
Shops and boutiques
January is when Christmas gift cards come back across the counter. Treat those customers like guests: an evening for card holders, a styling hour or a free alteration on anything bought with a card. Value added, price intact.
Health, beauty and fitness
Sell routines, not transformations. A "first four weeks" starter pack with a fixed weekly booking time helps the 32 per cent chasing fitness turn a wish into a habit. Keep every claim clear of weight loss, skip before-and-after photos and give people a reason to bring a friend.
Builders, trades and home services
January is when people stare at the house that just hosted Christmas. Publish your real 2027 lead times, so a February consult becomes a winter build. Our post on marketing ideas for builders and renovators has more.
Accountants, brokers and advisers
With 85 per cent of Finder's respondents setting a financial goal, January is your month to be useful. Send a plain-English "year ahead" note, offer a first conversation in February and keep it all to general information. Our guide on marketing for mortgage brokers and financial planners covers where the lines sit.
Tourism operators and experiences
January visitors are often staying with locals, and the locals choose the outings. Invite locals in February, once the spare beds empty, with a bonus activity added, so hosts try you while it's quiet. Our marketing ideas for tourism operators explain why that works.

Four ways to fumble the first month
- Opening with "new year, new you". It hints last year's customer wasn't good enough, and weight-loss promises can land you in hot water.
- Treating January as a sale month by reflex. When more than half of Finder's respondents want to save more, bundles, bonus services and extra time feel generous without gutting your margin.
- Planning on one state's calendar. Serving both means two start dates and two time zones.
- Writing the plan and filing it. Put the April check-in in the diary today, and turn up to it.
Pencilling Paint nights into the year
Paint is a mobile night out of up to three hours: hosts and music arrive at the venue, guests paint a canvas layer by layer, and singalongs and trivia fill the gaps while each layer dries. The room is mostly women, from their thirties into their nineties, who come with sisters, mums, friends and workmates. Paint has hosted 42,000+ guests, thousands of women among them, and the regional rooms run big: Cessnock in the Hunter welcomed 110 guests and Armidale in New England 101.
Two hypothetical ways to plan a year of it in January:
- Picture a family-owned bedding and homewares store with shops in four regional towns. In January it signs on as the named partner for its category, with a fresh moment each quarter, so the same friendly name greets the room all year. That's the idea behind a category partnership.
- Or a Sunshine Coast skincare maker that has just picked up stockists in Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie and the Hunter. It follows the nights from town to town after each stockist opens, with a code per town to see which rooms send people to the shelf. That's how regional and touring campaigns work.
Every partner is disclosed to guests as a paid partner, and no guest data changes hands: you collect your own opt-ins through your own offer. The full range sits on the Paint Juicy CONNECT hub.
New year planning questions, answered
Is it worth marketing in January when so many customers are on holiday?
Yes, but change the job. Early January is the peak time for annual leave, so it's a poor week for a hard sell and a good one for helpful, low-pressure content and for taking bookings for February and March. Save your big launch for the weeks when routines restart: from 27/01/2027 in Queensland and 03/02/2027 for most of NSW.
How can I use the new year fresh start without sounding like every other ad?
Be specific and kind. Skip "new year, new you" and any hint of weight loss or before-and-after photos. Offer a starting point instead: a first booking with a set time, a four-week routine, a skill to learn with a friend. Research on the fresh start effect found smaller lifts at the start of each new week and month, so you can offer another fresh start in February rather than cramming everything into January.
Should my business run an Australia Day promotion?
Think carefully before making the day itself your hook. The National Australia Day Council notes that 26 January has multiple meanings: it is Australia Day for some and Survival Day for others, and some people consider it a day of mourning. You can still plan well for the four-day stretch from Saturday 23/01/2027: summer opening hours, stock for a long weekend and a well-briefed roster. Promote the weekend and your summer offer rather than the date.
How detailed should a yearly marketing plan be for a small business?
One page is plenty if it's the right page: three goals with numbers, the dates your trade depends on, four main campaigns with start dates, a budget by quarter and a review booked for April. The business.gov.au template helps if you want more structure. A plan you look at monthly beats a thick document nobody opens again.
When should we book event partnerships and sponsorships for 2027?
In January, if you can, for anything you want in the first half of the year. Busy stretches such as the lead-up to Mother's Day or the end of the financial year book out early, and good partners need time to plan artwork, goodie bags or a presented-by night properly. Early booking also spreads your presence across the year.
Start 2027 with the year already pencilled in
If your 2027 plan has room for a few nights in front of thousands of women who came for the singalong and stayed for the canvas, tell us in January while the diary is still clean.
