“The whole room felt like joy!!”

Thermie Carmie, five-star Google review

Classics from the 60s and 70s, step-by-step painting from our host artist and a room that genuinely sings along. This is what a good day out looks like.

Good to know: 18+ only. No BYO.

What this afternoon is

Sunday lunch in South West Rocks just got a soundtrack. We're bringing a 60s and 70s singalong paint and sip to South West Rocks Country Club on Sunday 8 November, with painting kicking off at 1pm and Lotti Rem singing live while your canvas goes from blank to desert sunset. Because it's an afternoon session, you're heading home in daylight with a bit of paint on your sleeve and a chorus stuck in your head.

The music is the stuff that came out of the car radio on family holidays, and probably the records you nicked from your parents later on. Think Motown harmonies and Beatles-era pop, then the 70s turning up with disco and the soft rock ballads everybody swears they don't know the words to. Lotti carries the tunes while your host calls each brushstroke over the mic. The gaps between layers, while the paint dries, are usually when the whole room ends up on its feet for a chorus.

A 1pm Sunday start suits plenty of people. Mums and daughters, mates who've been promising a catch-up since winter, couples who fancy something livelier than a roast, and hens or birthday groups who want the party early with room left for dinner afterwards. The club makes the timing easy, too. Coast & Clover, the bistro, and the Social Alley Diner downstairs both do lunch, so you can have lunch first and grab a drink from the bar on your way to your easel.

It's an easy Sunday drive in from Arakoon, Kempsey, Frederickton, Smithtown and Gladstone, and worth the run from Hat Head or Crescent Head if you're turning it into a day out. The club runs a courtesy bus, so check with them whether it covers your street before you leave the car keys on the bench.

Can't do the Sunday? We're on the Mid North Coast all that weekend, with an 80s and 90s night at Lake Cathie on Saturday 7 November. Every date in the area sits on the Kempsey paint and sip page, and the rest of the state is on the full NSW calendar.

Today's Artwork

Prick My Interest

Swap the beach for the desert this Sunday. Your canvas starts with a sunset sky painted in stripes, deep blue fading to teal, then orange, then a blaze of yellow sitting right on the horizon, finished with a crescent moon and a sprinkle of stars. Two big saguaro cacti take the spotlight, arms raised, while their smaller cousins stand on the soft brown dunes behind. It is bright, it is cheeky and it comes together one simple layer at a time.

FAQs

Who's singing this afternoon?

Lotti Rem is singing live for the whole afternoon, working through the 60s and 70s songbook while you paint. Having a real singer in the room makes joining in far less daunting.

What are we painting?

Prick My Interest, a desert scene with a striped sunset sky, a crescent moon and a pair of tall saguaro cacti waving from the dunes. It builds one simple layer at a time, and the cacti are much friendlier to paint than they are to hug.

What time does it start and finish?

Painting starts at 1pm and the session runs for up to 3 hours, so you'll be wrapping up around 4pm with the rest of your Sunday still free.

I haven't painted since school. Is that a problem?

Not even slightly. Your host breaks the artwork into small steps and demonstrates each one on the mic before you try it, and most of the room is in exactly the same boat.

Will I have to sing?

Only if the mood takes you, and with 60s and 70s classics playing, it usually does. Mouthing the words counts, and so does air guitar.

Is it fine to rock up solo?

Absolutely. Solo guests book all the time, and we'll pop you at a table with other painters so you've got someone to compare cacti with by the first break.

We booked separately. Can we sit together?

Yes. When you check out, type your group name into the "sitting with friends" note and get everyone else to use the same one, so we can seat you next to each other.

Can we bring our own food or drinks?

No BYO for this one. The club has a licensed bar, and Coast & Clover and the Social Alley Diner both serve food on Sundays, so you won't go hungry or thirsty.

Is this a good pick for a hens or birthday group?

It's a great one. Leave a note at checkout saying who's celebrating and they'll get a shout-out during the afternoon.

Can I buy a ticket on the day?

Tickets are sold online only, right here on this page, and never at the door. Book before Sunday so there's a seat with your name on it.

Can we have a private session instead?

Yes, for groups of 10 or more. Your group pays $700 AUD all up for the first 10 guests, every guest past that adds $65, with a 10-seat minimum on paid tickets. You choose from our artwork catalogue and we'll tweak colours and details for free. See private paint and sip parties.

We attended Paint Juicy in Yeppoon, painting the beautiful turtle. That's what drew me to this event - it's actually something I'd like to proudly show off on my wall. The whole team were incredibly welcoming and friendly. The instructors and helpers were really patient and made it super easy to produce our own artworks. The live musician made the whole atmosphere feel like a great big party of "friends we haven't met yet" while we were singing along to music that took us back to adolescent memories. And it was great to see everyone walking around admiring each other's paintings while they dried and chatting with their creators.
We had a ton of fun and despite not feeling like I'm particularly arty, I was really proud to have produced a beautiful keepsake and reminder of a great night out with friends. Thanks team, we will definitely keep an eye out for the next time you come back to Yeppoon.
