Hervey Bay has a reputation as a gentle retiree town that turns the lights off early. We have toured through here enough to tell you that is only half the story. Yes it is calm, that is the whole appeal, but the Fraser Coast turns on glassy sunsets over the water, a pier nearly a kilometre long, beachfront pubs and the small matter of being the whale watching capital of the world. This is our local-tested rundown of the best things to do in Hervey Bay at night, written by a crew who actually turns up, sets up and sings along here.

1. Catch the sunset along the Esplanade

Charlton Esplanade, Torquay through Scarness. The 17-kilometre foreshore is the heartbeat of Hervey Bay, and dusk is when it shines. Grab fish and chips, claim a gas barbecue or a bench, and watch the sky go pink over the calm water with K'gari sitting out on the horizon. There are lit paths the whole way for an after-dinner stroll, pelicans cruising the shallows and gelato spots open into the evening. Free, easy and the most Hervey Bay way there is to start a night.

2. Walk Urangan Pier at dusk

Pier Street, Urangan. At close to a kilometre, the heritage Urangan Pier is one of the longest in the country, and it is at its best as the light drops. Walk out over the water as the locals drop a line for whiting and flathead, watch the colours change over the Great Sandy Strait, and stay for the stars because the light pollution out here is next to nothing. Bring a jumper, the breeze picks up off the water once the sun is gone.

3. The Saturday-night light show at WetSide

The Esplanade, Pialba. A genuine local secret: every Saturday night at 7pm the WetSide Water Park puts on a free fountain and light show, water dancing to music and colour against the dark. It is a lovely, no-cost, family-friendly way to cap a Saturday on the foreshore, and it sits right on the Esplanade so you can roll straight from dinner to the show to a wander along the beach. 4. Beachfront dinner at Enzo's on the Beach

351a The Esplanade, Scarness. When you want a proper feed with your toes nearly in the sand, Enzo's on the Beach is the local institution, right on the Scarness foreshore with the water as your view. It runs all day and into the evening with share plates, wood-fired pizzas, cocktails and a relaxed beach-house vibe that suits a date or a group equally. Book a table near the front and time it for sunset.

5. A paint and sip night (yes, ours, and we have receipts)

We would be fibbing by leaving this off. Paint Juicy runs paint and sip events in Hervey Bay, and the Bay turns up every time. Three hours of guided painting, full-throated singalongs, sips and zero artistic talent required. Last time through we took over the Kondari Resort for a 70s and 80s singalong, all peacocks, polyester and at least one very committed pink wig.

6. Live music and a beer garden at the Torquay Hotel

421 Charlton Esplanade, Torquay. One of the original Fraser Coast pubs, the Torquay Hotel has been a local institution for two decades and its beer garden looks straight out over the bay towards K'gari. Casual dining, a sports bar, regular live music and a cold one with a sea breeze, it is the dependable pick for a relaxed group night right on the Esplanade. Sit out the back, order a schnitty, settle in.

7. A beachfront pub night at the Beach House Hotel

344 The Esplanade, Scarness. A Hervey Bay landmark since the 1950s, the Beach House Hotel sits dead opposite Scarness Jetty and beach, which makes the deck one of the best sunset perches in town. Pub classics, a big drinks list and an easy, buzzy crowd. Eat as the sun drops, then stroll across to the jetty for the after-dinner walk. Unpretentious and reliably good.

8. A waterfront feed at the Hervey Bay Boat Club

Buccaneer Drive, Urangan. Out at the marina end, the Hervey Bay Boat Club is the big, easygoing group answer, with Sinbad's Bistro turning out a seafood-heavy menu and water views over the Great Sandy Strait. It is licensed, it is roomy, the prices are friendly and the deck at dusk with the boats coming in is quietly one of the nicest spots in town. Big tables and birthdays slot in without fuss.

9. Time it for whale season and a sunset cruise

Departs Great Sandy Straits Marina, Buccaneer Drive, Urangan. Honesty first: the humpbacks roll into the bay from roughly late July to early November, so if you are reading this mid-winter the whales are nearly here, not here yet. But when the season is on, a late-afternoon whale watch that runs into a golden-hour cruise back to the marina is one of the great Hervey Bay nights, and several operators run sunset and twilight options out of the marina. Out of whale season, a plain sunset cruise on the calm bay still delivers. Book ahead either way.
