But the second the sun starts dropping behind the islands, the place quietly turns on one of the best evenings in North Queensland. 1. Sunset cocktails at Coral Sea Marina

Shingley Drive, Airlie Beach. The marina boardwalk is the headline sunset, and the venues lined along it know it. Sorrento, perched at the northern end, is famous for sundowners with wood-fired pizza, seafood and live music almost every night, while The Garden Bar does tropical cocktails, burgers and tapas with the yachts and islands as your backdrop. The free, man-made lagoon on the foreshore is the heart of Airlie, surrounded by landscaped gardens and grassy picnic spots, and it stays lit and lovely well after sunset. It is safe, central and completely free, which makes it the easiest possible start or finish to an Airlie night.

3. Dinner and a mojito at Fish D'vine and the Rum Bar

Shute Harbour Road, Airlie Beach. Airlie's longest-standing independent restaurant and a genuine institution, Fish D'vine pairs the freshest local seafood, coral trout, mud crab, the lot, with a rum bar holding more than 500 rums from around the world and a mojito many regulars will tell you is the best they have had anywhere. It starts as dinner and slides into a proper bar as the night goes on. Book a table, then let the bartenders take you on a tour of the rum shelf.

4. A paint and sip night (yes, ours, and we have receipts)

We would be fibbing by leaving this off. Paint Juicy runs paint and sip events in Airlie Beach, and the holiday-town crowd, locals, travellers and weekenders alike, are all mates within about ten minutes. Last time through, James and I rolled into Airlie for a breather after a massive week of events and, being physically incapable of relaxing, ran a session anyway under those big Whitsunday skies, curlews supervising from the lawn like unpaid security guards.

Woodwark, a 10-minute drive from Airlie Beach. Worth the short trip out of town, Northerlies Beach Bar and Grill is a beachfront beer garden with seafood platters, live music and an uninterrupted view across the Coral Sea, the kind of laid-back tropical sundowner spot people rave about long after they leave. Courtesy shuttle buses run from the Airlie Beach Esplanade, so you can leave the car and settle in for the sunset. Go early, stay late, let the band carry the night.

6. A twilight sail on the Whitsundays

Departs Coral Sea Marina and the Port of Airlie. If you only do one big-ticket night in Airlie, make it a sunset or twilight sail. A clutch of operators run evening cruises out of the marinas, drinks in hand, sails up, the islands going gold then pink then dark as you glide across the Whitsunday Passage. It is the most Airlie thing on this list and the photos are absurd. Book ahead, especially in the dry-season peak, because the good ones fill fast.

7. A wander down the Shute Harbour Road strip

Shute Harbour Road, Airlie Beach. Airlie's main street is a compact, walkable run of bars, restaurants and live music that ranges from a quiet Italian feed at a place like La Tabella to a proper late one. Everything is within a few hundred metres, the crowd is friendly and holiday-loose, and it is the natural place for a night to drift from dinner to drinks to one more song. Park the car, pick a direction, and let the strip do the rest.
