Main Beach is where the Gold Coast keeps its quiet money and its loudest geography. 1. Dinner on Tedder Avenue

Tedder Avenue, Main Beach. The original Gold Coast dining strip still does it with the most polish: a leafy avenue of restaurants, cafes and bars where the alfresco tables run from afternoon coffee straight through to late dinner and the people-watching is a sport with its own scoring system. The pace is unhurried, the cooking is reliably good, and the strip's compact size means the stroll-and-choose lap takes ten minutes. Book the favourites on weekends, wander in midweek.

2. Sunset drinks at Southport Yacht Club

Macarthur Parade, Main Beach. Holding the Broadwater since 1946, Southport Yacht Club runs the coast's only open-air, north-facing waterfront restaurant and bar, looking across its 300-berth marina with the superyachts as set dressing. The Waterfront Restaurant serves lunch and dinner seven days, non-members are welcome, and the 4Shore Bar on the quarterdeck catches the sun setting behind the hinterland, the over-water sunset trick, with table service. Book ahead for the water's edge tables, they go first for a reason.

3. The Spit at dusk

Doug Jennings Park, end of Seaworld Drive. Drive to the end of the road and the Gold Coast runs out of buildings. The Spit's final stretch is parkland, dunes and ocean, and at dusk it is the wildest light show on the coast: the seaway on one side, open surf on the other, South Stradbroke across the channel and the city skyline glowing behind you. The Federation Walk tracks through the dunes for anyone who wants to earn it, the park lawns suit anyone who does not, and the whole thing costs exactly nothing.

4. Drop a line off the seaway wall

The Gold Coast Seaway, northern end of The Spit. The rock wall at the seaway is the coast's most famous land-based fishing platform, and after dark it earns the reputation: tailor, trevally and jew working the current lines while the wall crowd trades theories under headlamps. Even rod-free, the night walk out along the wall with the seaway running beside you and Straddie's silhouette across the channel is worth the trip. Watch your footing, respect the swell, and let the regulars have the good rocks.

5. Main Beach under the towers

Main Beach foreshore, via the Esplanade. The suburb's namesake beach at dusk is the calm cousin of the Surfers stretch one suburb south: the same golden sand and rolling surf, a fraction of the foot traffic, and the towers lighting up behind the dunes as the sky drains. The oceanway path runs the length of it for the evening walk, the surf club end stays lively, and the further north you drift toward The Spit, the more of the beach belongs to you.

6. A paint and sip singalong (yes, ours, and the chorus carries over the Broadwater)
