What this night is
Hervey Bay, the 90s and 00s are calling and they want their butterfly clips back. On Saturday 28 November, the Hervey Bay Hotel on the Esplanade at Pialba hosts a singalong paint and sip built around the two decades of frosted lip gloss, burnt CDs and MSN status updates. Painting starts at 6pm and the night runs up to three hours.
Lotti Rem sings it live, swinging from pop-punk anthems to R&B slow jams and the girl group hits you didn't realise were still stored in your brain. This is the night for anyone whose first concert ticket was a boy band, or whose phone once had a ringtone they paid good money for. Requests are welcome, and the 00s section has a habit of turning polite tables into a full-blown chorus line.
On the easel is Whale of a Time, two humpbacks breaching against a sunset of pink, red and gold, with a school of fish darting through the turquoise below. It suits Hervey Bay down to the ground. Your host walks you through every layer on the mic, and the drying time between layers is when the room gets loudest and the phones come out for the progress shots.
Late November is catch-up season, so this is a handy one for the end of year get-together that keeps getting pushed back, whether that's the work team or the old school group chat that still carries a Spice Girls name. Hens and birthday groups get a shout-out when you leave a note at checkout, and anyone booking a single seat gets placed with a friendly table.
It's an easy trip in from Scarness, Torquay, Urangan, Point Vernon and Eli Waters, and a short drive up for the Maryborough crowd. The hotel has a bar and a restaurant doing Asian fusion and pub classics if you want a feed before the first brushstroke. Two humpbacks launch out of the water against a sunset that cannot pick just one colour, deep blue up top melting through pink, red and gold at the horizon. One breaches with a fin in the air while a tail waves off to the side, and under the surface a little school of fish darts through the turquoise. Pretty fitting for the whale watching capital of the country. Big, bold and completely doable from the very first brushstroke, with all the room in the world to make that sky your own.

Before you arrive
Arrive a few minutes early. The Hervey Bay Hotel has food and drinks available. Get settled in, grab a drink and find your seat before painting starts.
Wear clothes you do not mind painting in. We supply aprons but acrylic paint is enthusiastic and occasionally ambitious.
Dress ups are absolutely welcomed. Anything 90s or 00s gets a big reaction from the room.
Tickets are online only. They are not sold at the door. Book yours before the night.

Is the singing live?
Very. Lotti Rem performs for the full session, covering the 90s and 00s from pop-punk to R&B. Having a real voice up front makes the choruses far easier to join.
Tell me about the painting.
It's Whale of a Time, two humpbacks leaping out of the water under a sunset of deep blue melting into pink, red and gold, with fish darting below the surface. Big shapes, bold colour and a very Hervey Bay souvenir.
How long does it run?
Paint hits canvas at 6pm. Give it up to 3 hours and you're finished near 9pm, with plenty of Saturday night still ahead of you.
Do I need to be arty?
Not even slightly. Your host demonstrates each stage before you paint it, and the whales are built from simple shapes you'll recognise straight away.
Is singing compulsory?
No, though the 00s have a way of pulling the quietest person in the room into the chorus.
Is a party of one welcome?
Yes. Solo guests come along all the time. We'll slot you in with a welcoming bunch, and you'll know everyone's name by the first chorus.
Different bookings, same group. Can we sit together?
Yes. Each booker writes the same group name in the "sitting with friends" note while paying, and we'll keep you all at one table.
Can I bring a bottle or a platter?
No BYO. The Hervey Bay Hotel has a bar and a restaurant serving Asian fusion and classic pub meals, so everything you need is on site.
We're celebrating a hens, birthday or work Christmas. Does that work?
Perfectly. Leave a note at checkout saying who or what you're celebrating and we'll shout them out on the night. Work teams can use the "sitting with friends" note to stay at the same table.
Where can I get tickets?
Online only, through this page. There won't be any for sale at the door on the night.
Can we have a private session?
Yes, once your group reaches 10 paid seats. A flat $700 AUD takes care of the first 10 guests, and every extra guest adds $65. You'll pick the artwork from our catalogue, and any colour or detail changes are on the house. Book a private paint and sip party.
