1. Dinner and drinks along High Street

High Street, Penrith. High Street is the spine of a Penrith night, a walkable run of restaurants and bars covering just about every craving. Tuck into tapas at The Union, juicy bao and dumplings at Duck Duck Goose, funky Mexican at Checho's, or all-day dining in the grand heritage rooms of Percy Plunkett. Park once, wander the strip, and follow your nose. It is the easy answer for a group that cannot agree.

2. A speakeasy night at Mr Watkin's

High Street, Penrith. A cafe by day and a speakeasy-style bar and restaurant by night, Mr Watkin's was Penrith's first small bar and still sets the tone. The 80-seat room leans into a turn-of-the-century theme, named for the colonial officer who first reached the Nepean, with share plates, bar snacks and a long drinks list. Settle in for a grazing feast and a few cocktails. It is the sort of room a night tends to linger in.

3. The riverfront at East Bank and the Great River Walk

East Bank, along the Nepean River, Penrith. The Nepean is Penrith's best natural asset, and the East Bank precinct stitches together a handful of cafes and restaurants along the Great River Walk right on the water. Stroll the riverside path as the light goes, then settle in for dinner with the river in front of you. The Orchard, a relaxed restaurant and garden bar with fire pits further along the riverbank, is another lovely spot to land on a cool night. Easy, pretty and uncrowded.

4. Sunset cocktails at Theo's Rooftop Bar

Penrith CBD. For the night that wants a view, Theo's Rooftop Bar does open-air drinks with a panorama straight out to the Blue Mountains, which is the move at sunset with a cocktail in hand. Time it for the last of the light as the mountains turn pink, then carry on into dinner down on High Street. Rooftops are made for golden hour, and this is Penrith's pick.

5. A paint and sip night (yes, ours, and we have receipts)

Mulgoa Road, Penrith. Love it or not, Penrith Panthers Leagues Club is a night out in its own right, a sprawling entertainment complex with a wall of restaurants and bars, from CJ's Crab Shack for a seafood feast to Kellys Bar and Kitchen for a casual feed, plus the Gatsby-inspired speakeasy Dom's for a proper cocktail. Add live entertainment most weekends and you can run a whole evening without leaving the car park. It is the easy group answer when you want everything under one roof.

8. Craft beer at Rusty Penny Brewery

4/137 Coreen Avenue, Penrith. A fast-rising local favourite, Rusty Penny pours a dozen beers on tap, including the crisp Penrith Lager and a gateway pale called The Nepean, plus a dry cider for the non-beer crowd. It is a relaxed, hands-on brewery taproom for an early-evening session before dinner or a low-key whole night with mates. Grab a tasting paddle and work your way along the taps.
